TED Talks About the Environment

12 Talks to Get You Thinking

One of my favourite apps on my iPhone is my TED Talks app. Not familiar with TED Talks? Here’s what it’s all about in a nutshell:

“TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.” —TED Talks website

What I love about it is that I can hear some of the smartest minds talk about their passion—for free. There are hundreds of TED Talks to choose from, and the speakers are quite an eclectic bunch—scientists, celebrities, comedians, doctors, chefs, authors, entrepreneurs—I could go on and on.

There are some really interesting talks that focus on the environment. If you happen to find yourself some free time (some of them are only five minutes long!), take a listen—they are all fascinating and I’m sure you will learn a thing or two. Or three.

Here are 12 great talks to start with:

Capt. Charles Moore on the seas of plastic

Alex Steffen: The route to a sustainable future

Mark Bittman: What's wrong with what we eat

Barton Seaver: Sustainable seafood? Let's get smart

Carl Safina: The oil spill's unseen culprits, victims

Rachel Sussman: The world's oldest living things

Eben Bayer: Are mushrooms the new plastic?

Eric Sanderson pictures New York — before the City

Cary Fowler: One seed at a time, protecting the future of food

Yann Arthus-Bertrand captures fragile Earth in wide-angle

Dianna Cohen: Tough truths about plastic pollution

Johan Rockstrom: Let the environment guide our development
