An Honour Just To Be Nominated

Celebrating COPAwards As A Team

by: Erica Ehm

An Honour Just To Be Nominated

When I found out YMC was a finalist in two categories at the prestigious Canadian Online Publishers Awards, I almost fainted with pride. YMC was chosen as one of four finalists in the Best Overall Online-only Publication. We also made the final cut in the category for Best Blog. Woot!

When I got the good news I felt like I was going to explode if I didn't call someone right away. But who to call? My husband who puts up his wife working all the time? My mother who raised me to follow my dreams? Of course not—first on the list was my partner in crime for the last (almost) five years Sharon DeVellis. The problem was I was in the dressing room at Winners when I was notified. So half-dressed, I called Sharon and yelled/whispered the amazing news to her! We giggled and shrieked (quietly) together about how proud we were that our not-so-little-anymore team was being recognized for all of our hard work and innovation. Next was General Manager Jen Charron, who joined the team two years ago to put processes in place and in her spare time completely oversaw our site redesign. Finally, our awesome Editor-in-Chief Ali Martell received the next crazed call from me to celebrate together.

So, now I know what they mean when they say "It's an honour just to be nominated" at the Oscars. It is! It really is such a boost to be blessed by being singled out as one of the country's best! Which doesn't mean to say that winning wasn't important. I really, really wanted to win—both categories. It's an honour to be nominated and even better to take home the gold.

The winners were being announced at a downtown schmooze fest put on by Masthead Magazine, so we decided to make it a party. A dozen of us dolled up, dressed to win.

To make a long story short—we lost. Both categories. We didn't get to take home the coveted Gold. Talk about a letdown.

I didn't cry. Because, even though it would have been awesome to be able to shout from our virtual roof WE ARE NUMBER ONE, we can still say WE ARE ONE OF THE TOP FOUR best online publications in Canada. And, more importantly, I work with the the number one team Canada. I'm not just saying that.

The amount of creativity, dedication, passion and plain old hard work the staff and bloggers infuse into the site on a daily basis is what makes it electric. The worst part of not getting to go up to the podium was that I wasn't able to thank my entire staff for changing my life and making YummyMummyClub.ca more spectacular than I could have ever dreamt. And I couldn't thank our readers—YOU!—the women who make the site come alive by reading the posts, writing articles and leaving the comments. Without all of you, the site would be a virtual ghost-town.

So thank you to Masthead Magazine and the Canadian Online Publishers Association for these amazing nominations. Even though we lost the big one, I win every day at work. (Watch out—next year we're gonna take it home!)

When Brands Get It Right With Bloggers

Dairy Queen's Deliciously Sweet Surprise

by: Erica Ehm

When Brands Get It Right With Bloggers

There is an uncomfortable dance going on between bloggers, brands, and PR companies. I see the myriad ways brands are trying to connect with bloggers, often unsuccessfully, in the hopes said blogger will promote company's product or service, preferably for free. Conversely, people who post are hoping to make a few bucks leveraging their "influence" on behalf of brands.

It's a thing of beauty when blog and brand connect in a mutually beneficial way, both sides pleased when they achieve what they need.

On a personal level, as a publisher of a site which features a stellar cast of talented bloggers, I am of the mind that the brand should pay for exposure. It's called advertising.

But I'm also not heartless and appreciate a job well done, like this fantastic package I was sent by a PR agency last year. So it is my utmost pleasure to proudly promote Dairy Queen's new incredibly delicious nut-free, gluten-free ice cream cakes. Here's why.

Two weeks ago, someone from Publicis PR Agency asked if they could deliver something sweet to me. "As long as it's nut free" I replied. He assured me that was the case and then I forgot about it.

Five days later, there's a knock at my door. Holding a big cake box with ribbon looking suspiciously like a YMC logo are two guys from Publicis (not a courier!).

I guess I looked surprised because one of the guys launched into this incredibly sweet speech about how proud they were of YMC for being a finalist in the Canadian Online Publishers Awards. My jaw dropped! These guys had really done their research! They continued by telling me their client Dairy Queen wanted to celebrate moms for their achievements with a celebratory ice cream cake. They handed me a handwritten personalized note reiterating this story.

And then they presented me with one of the most amazing cakes I've ever received. Not exaggerating.

No, this was not just any cake. This was the cake among cakes. First, it was stunningly gorgeous with a big YMC logo on it. Apparently anyone can now order a personalized cake like this. It was NUT-FREE, and gluten free. As a mom of a nut allergic child, this is terribly exciting and impressive. This means we can have personalized ice-cream cakes for all our parties now!  And it was DELICIOUS. Basically, they floored me.

So now that I have my wits about me, I want to thank those two nice guys from Publicis (I forgot their names because I was so surprised) for really taking the time to "pitch me" in a thoroughly meaningful way. And thank you to Dairy Queen, not just for celebrating moms, but for making a nut-free, gluten-free cake families can safely enjoy. I will spread the word to anyone who will listen. Good job!

I Want to Send You To Blissdom

Just Tell Me Why You Want to Go

by: Erica Ehm

I Want to Send You To Blissdom

Did you know that I actually haven't met all the YMC bloggers in person yet? To entice everyone across the country who works with YMC to come to Toronto I offered to buy everyone a ticket to Blissdom. I know, I'm evil like that.

But what about you, the YMC Reader? Clearly YMC wouldn't exist if not for you coming to the site to read, to write articles, to leave comments, to enter contests. So I think it's only fair for you to get a free ticket to Blissdom too.

I have two Blissdom tickets to give away. All you need to do is tell me you want to go to Blissdom and what your favorite thing about YMC is in the comments below.

This is not a random contest. This is me picking two deserving moms who want to experience Blissdom. I will let the winners know by mid-day Wednesday, October 17. Be sure to have registered with our commenting system below so I can find you to tell you that you won. You must be a YMC member to qualify!

This is not a random contest. This is me picking two deserving moms who want to experience Blissdom!

On your marks, get set, go tell me why you need a ticket (as well as your fave thing about YMC!)
