Most of Us Have Had a #MomentofChange, What's Yours?

Share your moments of change and help others have theirs

Most of Us Have Had a #MomentofChange, What's Yours?

Most of Us Have Had a #MomentofChange, What's Yours?

There's a moment in all of our lives that causes us to change our path and head in a new direction. For most of us, unplanned or not, it has already happened. Moments like a marriage or the birth of a child. Even though these events may have been planned, these catalysts still move us onto a new path that shapes our lives in a positive way.

My own unplanned moment happened on a volleyball court in 2009, and while the experience may not have started out in a positive way, I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

I suffered a series of Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA’s) that were caused from blood clots blocking the flow of blood to my brain. In that period of uncertainty, I decided to reprioritize my life. I decided that I would make the time to actually "live" instead of spending all of my energy focused on my career. In that instant, I had my own moment of change. As a result, I bought a farm, I started a community vegetable garden, and became a father figure to someone who really needed one.

Not only did I decide to refocus on the things that mattered, I also decided to partner with companies and organizations that feel the same way. Save the Children is one such group. With programs in over 120 countries around the world, Save the Children is the largest independent organization creating moments of change for the world’s youth.

Share Your #MomentofChange

Save the Children is starting a new media campaign called ‘Moment of Change.’ A Moment of Change is that instant when your journey takes you somewhere you never expected to go. We are asking Canadians to share their own moments using the social media hashtag #MomentofChange. Share with others on social media that one moment when your path was altered from something you did or a positive action from someone else. Even if you haven’t had a moment of your own, go to MomentofChange.ca to see other posts from Canadians and people around the world. At that point, you can also make a small donation to help Save the Children continue to make a #MomentofChange for others in need.

This holiday season, share a special moment from your life and join me in helping Save the Children create moments of change for others.

Beautiful 5 Minute Holiday Hostess Gift

Be someone's favourite guest this year

Beautiful 5 Minute Holiday Hostess Gift

A frugal DIY hostess gift for this holiday season - A sprouting flower bulb for a beautiful indoor garden. | Gardening | Christmas | Frugal | YummyMummyClub.ca

I know how busy everyone is at this time of the year, so it means a little more when people make the extra effort to host a party. So I always try to do a little extra around the holidays for anyone who makes the effort to have me over for dinner. This year, instead of a bottle of wine, I’m doing something a little different.

Truth is, I didn’t get all of my fall jobs done before winter moved in. One of the big ones was planting my bulbs. Now I have a ton of daffodils and tulips sitting in my garage. This year as hostess gifts, I’m going to force these bulbs and plant them as decorative hostess gifts.  Here’s how you can bring a little outdoors in for the holidays.

The bulbs are definitely the most important part of this project. Now I had lots left over which makes my shopping simple. If you need some, look for the sales at the garden centres and the box stores. Choose daffodils, crocus, tulips or even paper-whites. All of these are easily grown indoors. Also, consider using a large amaryllis, which is perfect around the holidays because it’s blooming right in the middle of party season!

Christmas Bulbs

Start by chilling your bulbs (except Amaryllis). This starts the growing process. There seems to be a big disagreement among the experts as to how long you should chill. Some say 12-15 weeks in the fridge or the garage. I know that I’ve had success with bulbs that only had a few weeks of cool-time. Choose bulbs that already have tips growing if you don’t have time to chill them.

Next, pick your container. I love using glass or metal pails. Once the bulbs are done, the container gets reused as something other than a flowerpot. Quick tip: if you are using something other than glass, make sure its waterproof!

Fill half of your container with rocks that will act as a base for your bulbs. If you have it, add a pinch of aquarium charcoal. The charcoal helps prevent any bacteria growth in the water. Arrange your bulbs, and add more rocks to hold them in place.

Bulb in pot

Fill your container so that the water is touching the base of the bulbs and covering the roots.

And don't forget to add a big festive bow!

Voila!  A perfect hostess gift that will not only impress, it will keep on giving for the entire holiday season with minimal commitment. A bottle of wine lasts for a few hours in my house, but blooming bulbs are guaranteed to bring a smile for several weeks. (You might want to make an extra one for you!)
