Tween Girl Birthday Party Ideas

Too Old For This, Too Young For That...What To Do?

Tween Girl Birthday Party Ideas

Birthdays for tween girls can be tough.  They are past princess parties, but yet, too young for rock concerts. So what's the right fit for celebrating the early double digits?  I have a few tips for tween girls' birthday parties.

Babysitters Club - Whether they have signed up for the babysitting course, or starting out on their babysitting career, "babysitting" can be an easy theme for a tween girl party.

• Have each girl bring a doll and then you can:

• Play "baby scavenger hunt" finding baby items around the yard or house

• Play "what's in the diaper" blindfolding kids and putting their hands in cups of pudding and cream of corn.

• Play "baby obstacle course" balancing an egg & spoon in one hand and doll in other have them run an obstacle course without dropping baby nor egg.

(NOTE: The Babysitters Club movie is an obvious choice for movie watching but when I looked up the trailer on YouTube, I found there was a sub-plot romance of a 13 year old girl and 17 year old boy. )

I just threw a "babysitters club" party for my tween this past weekend and it was a hit.

Other tween girl themes include:

Nancy Drew Girl Detective - a whole party of who/what/how sleuthing.

• Come up with a mystery to be solved.  Scavenger Hunt.  Clues.  Roadblocks and surprises make up for a fun party.

Halloween not in October - have the kids dress in costume in May (or February).

• Play all the regular "Halloween" type games you play, but out of season.  Do a haunted house.  Play creepy music.

Leaving My Baby

Reverse Separation Anxiety

Leaving My Baby

The guilt!  The anxiety!  The crying (mine not the baby's).  What causes such overwhelming emotion to a parent?  Leaving your baby for the first time...and I'm about to ride that roller coaster.

Whether you're going out on your first date since baby was born, returning to work after parental leave (or in my case) leaving on a work trip - leaving baby is a powerful experience.

Some feel liberated - after carrying the babe for 9 months, being attached at the breast (or hip) to the baby - a break can be a freeing thing.

I, myself, don't feel so liberated.

I'm about to head off to Blissdom Canada (a big blogging conference - will I see you there? - I'll be the one crying.  Hug me.)

The longest I've left baby is 7 hours.  7 day-time-of-which-he-slept-for-3 hours.  Blissdom is 3 days.  And I'm going through reverse separation anxiety.

And I know he'll be fine.  And in very good hands.  And heck, at 9 months he probably won't even realize I'm not there.

But I still feel guilty.

Any tips for leaving baby?  Either for a night, day or returning to work?  I bet others are interested to hear too.

Thankful Fall Activity for Kids

Easy, Low Budget and Fun

Thankful Fall Activity for Kids

Need an hour (or 4) to make dinner this weekend?  Need table decorations in a pinch?  Need to occupy the kids?  This activity is easy, low budget and really fun.  And all you need is something from the backyard.

Leaves.  Wonderful, brilliant, free and colourful leaves.  This is a 3 part activity:

Part 1

• "Kids go outside and get some leaves!"  Fresh air, scavenger hunting and activity procurement all in one.

NOTE: Inspect leaves for bugs

Part 2

• Have kids trace said leaves on construction paper.

• Then have them cut paper leaves.

• Have them write one word of something for which they are thankful (you could mention: FAMILY, FOOD, or HEALTH but should they chose to write T.V., DORA or FART so be it).

Part 3

• With the kids, decorate the table with their thankful leaves.  It will be a source of conversation, pride and perhaps humour (especially if someone writes FART)
