Believe me when I say, I am no fashion expert. Shopping for clothing is actually painful for me. I’m not adventurous at all, and stick mainly to the ho-hum. I admire people who can pull off new fashion trends as if they’d thought of it. I am not that person. I would just walk around feeling self-conscious and stupid. To each his own, right?

Anyone know who I petition to have the definition of scum changed? Websters? Wikipedia? Anyone? The reason I ask, is that I think its due for an overhaul. Meet my reason.

The man pictured here is John Goodman, a billionaire polo player. The woman pictured with him is his girlfriend. He just adopted her as his daughter. Why? Well because he killed a young man in the prime of his life while drunk driving, and is now trying to hide his assets from this young man's family.

Food Confusion

Why is food so dangerous?

A few years ago I read a book review in Maclean's magazine of Squeezed: What You Don't Know About Orange Juice. I only needed to read the article to be forever turned off of store-bought orange juice.

Get Your Sh*t Together and Start the New Year Clean

Do these small things now, While the Weather Sucks

This week my back door froze shut. That is an indication that it's too frickin' cold outside. It sucks. I'm sorry, there's really no other way around it. It bites the big one. So, what does one do when it's too cold to venture outside? One gets her house in order, so she's not doing it when the weather is good. Here are four things you should do this weekend that will keep you indoors and keep you on your toes:

Yesterday I woke up and made my children a Funky Monkey (chocolate almond milk & banana smoothie) and an omelet with bacon and cheese. My 9-year-old decided that on this particular day though she didn’t like this combination together, despite the fact that she practically tackles the rest of the family when bacon is served, and has had omelettes, oh I don’t know, a thousand times before.

And so it begins.

“I’m not eating it!”

LOL, Mommy's dead

Texting While Driving

It is not like me to use "shock and awe" when writing a blog. I usually let my words speak for themselves. However, due to the seriousness of this topic, I have chosen to post a very graphic photo.  If you are not comfortable with scenes of gore or are squeamish, please do not read any further. It is my hope that this image will jolt some people out of their stupor.

The way I figure it I have a mere 358 days left on this earth, give or take a day.  This is the year after all, that the Mayans predicted the end of the earth. So while I’m not going to make any resolutions this year, I am going to live this last year of my life differently, because when you know the exact date of your death you suddenly have outstanding clarity.

For my final days, these are my intentions:

-       Family first. Full stop.

Let’s face it, we all want to give our kids everything we can. But just because we can give our kids the world, does it mean we should? Who amongst us hasn’t dealt with his or her child begging for the next big thing in the store, only to watch them forget they have it the next day? How many moms throw their hands up in disgust when they hear their child say “I have nothing to play with,” knowing full well they have a room full of toys? How do we raise our children to be less materialistic and to be more grateful for what they have?

Consider these tips:

Don't End Up On The Holiday Naughty List

Be nice to the people who serve you

For many years I worked on the front lines in retail. For those who have never worked retail, let me tell you, it can be a hard job, particularly at Christmas. Christmas is when every single worker behind a cash wants to shout out at least once, “Take this job and shove it!”  Why? Well, I recall doing split shifts, where I’d be scheduled 4 hours in the morning and then 4 hours at night. That was fun, splitting your day up like that. Then there were the long hours.

Did you get up and have breakfast this morning? Plan your meals for the week? Stop at the grocery store and mindlessly pick up some food? Fall into a turkey coma?  Then consider yourself lucky.

900,000 Canadians regularly rely on Food Banks to get the nutrition they and their families need.  Chew on that for a minute.

We're leading up to World Food Day on October 16th and I wanted to share this with all of you so that we don't fall into apathy along with that turkey coma. This is what you need to know:

The Blame Game

Bullying: Who Is Really At Fault?

Last week I wrote about an 11 year old boy who killed himself because of bullying. The news hit me hard and I’m still not entirely sure why. Perhaps it was his age, or the fact that there is just way too much of this going on. But you should know, that blog was written with tears and a snotty nose. Maybe that’s why it touched a nerve. Whatever the reason, it resonated with people because ultimately, we’re all sick of this.

Someone is Raising the Bullies

Parents Need to Step Up and Do Their Job

Every day I read the news with a mixed bag of emotions; disgust, anger, sadness, empathy, heartbreak but it’s always tempered with a “Oh well, that’s what the world is like” kind of feeling. I move on, we all move on. We forget and we wait for the next big headline. The next tragic event. This morning I was stopped cold by a headline and I simply can’t move on. The headline read:

The Effin' Sweater

Do Your Kids Do This?

It is typical for my daughters to come in the house after school and dump their belongings smack dab in the middle of the front entrance and then scatter with shouts of “I’m hungry” or “I need to use the washroom”. Despite the fact that I flat out refuse to pick their things up anymore, the idea of doing it immediately when they come is toxic to them. In fact, today I saw exactly what lengths my one daughter will go to, to avoid putting an item where it belongs.
