Insomnia Might Be a Mompreneur's Best Friend

Waking up at 4:00 a.m. might not actually be a bad thing

I slept well last night. There was cold medication involved. In general, I am a terrible sleeper. Oh sure, I can get to sleep—it’s the staying asleep that’s the problem. But here’s the thing.  I don’t actually mind my insomnia all that much. I think that insomnia can be an invaluable asset—especially for a mompreneur like me.

Think about it. What’s a mompreneur’s most limited resource? Time, of course. Try waking up at 4:00 a.m on a regular basis. You’d be amazed at how much extra time that is. Imagine three hours of quiet time in which to focus on productive work. I can get caught up on e-mails and even make an attempt at inbox management. Depending on what’s going on at work I can even occasionally find a little ‘me-time’ in the way of catching up on a TV show.

On the downside, I do feel sorry for Amy waking up to 27 e-mails from me before she’s even had a cup of coffee. And my kids don’t exactly get the most enjoyable mother come 4:00 that afternoon. But quiet, uninterrupted time for working or just for myself? It’s turning into one of my favourite things.

I wouldn’t wish insomnia on you necessarily, but if you’ve got it, you may as well work it!

How do you make the most of sleeplessness?
