Good Mother Will Make Money

Part 2

Good Mother Will Make Money

Last post we told you about the Chinese publication of our book, Mom Inc. In China the subtitle reads, “Good Mother Will Make Money.” Given the outrageous nature of this claim, we’d like to go on the record and clear a few things up.

First, let us assure you, there is no scientifically proven correlation between the quality of your parenting and the earning potential of your business.

Second, since science has yet to come up with a way to measure the quality of your parenting, whether you are a good mother or not is hard to discern. One could, we suppose, ask the children for assistance in rating our skills, but in our houses the answer will likely be swayed by whether or not we have baked cookies lately, yelled about homework, or nagged about an unmade bed, and therefore the results cannot be deemed statistically reliable.

As far as making money goes, we’re sure that even the worst of mothers have made money, while some of the very best of our kind have not. It is our assertion that whether or not a good or bad mother will make money will depend on an exact application of the following diagram.

As you can see in the diagram above, a money-making business requires a good idea that satisfies a demand in the market and makes use of your particular interests and talents.

Assuming the mother in question (good or bad, as the case may be) has such a business idea, she will also require start-up cash, tenacity, an entrepreneurial spirit and quite a bit of luck, among a huge list of money-making necessities.

In conclusion, while we certainly wish all mothers, but particularly the good ones, great success in business, we cannot guarantee that mothers of any degree of goodness will, in fact, make money.
