Work-Life Balance?

RIP Supermom

work life balance
By now, enough has been written about ‘having it all’ that we can recognize that concept for what it is: The Supermom is as mythical as the unicorn. Studies have shown, in fact, that those of us who try to do it all — work, raise a family, carve out time for our relationships, and ourselves — are actually at greater risk for depression than those of us who accept that we can’t do it all.

Our mothers, bless them, paved the way for us to do whatever and be whomever we want. Who knew that that would mean we would now face a tyranny of choice? We can work outside the home, we can work inside the home. We can have nannies, we can be stay-at-home moms. We can do things full-time or part-time.

Or we can just decide to do things our own way. Over the years, we have met thousands of women — bloggers and entrepreneurs — who have decided to do just that. They are educated, smart, accomplished women who decided to get off the path and chart their own course. We often ask these women how they manage work-life balance. Sometimes they laugh. Sometimes they talk about the value of flexibility. Once, an insightful entrepreneur suggested, “There is no balance. Only compromise.”

And that’s the thing. How you define your balance, how you find your bliss, is up to you. Your life only needs to work for you.

Can you have it all? No, silly. Perfect lives are for unicorns and mermaids. But we truly believe, that if you follow your bliss, you can have most of what you want, most of time.
