Awesome News For Allergic Travellers!

SWISS Air Certified Allergy-Friendly

by: Alex Thom
SWISS Air becomes first allergy-friendly airline

SWISS Air is the first airline to become certified as "allergy-friendly," which is absolutely fantastic news for allergy sufferers around the globe! According to their site, the airline has "earned the quality seal of approval from the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) by considering the needs of passengers who suffer from allergies." It's a huge step in the right direction for allergy suffers (and it isn't just about food)!

So what does this certification mean for travellers? Well, SWISS has promised its passengers that they are working to minimize allergens in the lounge and cabin areas, with specific focus on materials used, air circulation, and food limitations. Their aim is to take some of the stress of travel out of the equation for those with allergies, whether they're food or environmental concerns.

Special filters are employed on all flights to minimize pollens and other airborne allergens, and no chemical air fresheners will be used. You know that sickening chemical smell that's pumped through the recycled air on most flights? Not on SWISS! They even have "hypoallergenic" soaps in washrooms.

And just in case there's a need, the staff is specifically trained to respond to allergic emergencies (but there is no mention of flights having epinephrine auto-injectors on board). They will have histamine tablets available, but I was unable to find other info, besides passengers being reminded to bring their medications in carry-on baggage.

They'll stock lactose-free milk, gluten-free options, and have a special menu for those with other food restrictions. They do not serve nuts on board, but also cannot verify that all their foods are specifically nut-free, because of the normal limitations of such verification. They sure do go a lot further than any other airline, though, in providing information and caring for allergic passengers!

Here's some more information about their new certification...

Way to go, SWISS Air! Here's hoping other airlines follow!
