Canadian University Among World's Top 20

Canadian University Among World's Top 20

university of toronto

Toronto haters, look away. The University of Toronto has been named as Canada's top university by the 2013 Times Higher Education (THE) World University, scoring a place in the top 20 in the world.

The global ranking jumped one place from last year. But more telling is the fact that the U of T has been recognized as the cream of the academic crop in other major global rankings surveys, including the QS World University Rankings and Academic Ranking of World Universities.

“One learns more from trends and triangulation than from any one ranking or single year’s results,” said U of T President David Naylor. “To consistently perform so well in these rankings is due to the excellence of our faculty, staff, and students. And doing so in a challenging fiscal and policy climate is also a measure of the support we’ve received from alumni and friends in recent years.”

According to the press release, other Canadian universities that made the top 100 were the University of British Columbia, McGill University and McMaster University. Bad news for Ottawa U, which fell 14 spots to 185th.

American universities dominate the list, with seven top 10s, followed by the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and France.

The rankings are based on 13 comparative factors, including "teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook."

Giuliana Rancic's Surprise Post-Cancer Lifestyle

Life is to be enjoyed

Giuliana Rancic's Surprise Post-Cancer Lifestyle

guiliana rancic

Incredibly it's already been two years since Giuliana Rancic fought and won her war against breast cancer. But instead of being more preoccupied with a healthy lifestyle, the Fashion Police star has thrown caution to the wind.

"Life is to be enjoyed, not to be spent in the gym every day and not to be counting your calories," Rancic said.

According to an article in People, the 39-year-old admits that she's become more lax about diet and fitness.

"What's so funny is I've changed it quite drastically, the way I live and what I eat and how I exercise, but the opposite way you would think," she said. "Before I got the breast cancer I was actually pretty diligent about my diet and what I ate and I tried to eat very healthy foods and whole grains and tried to exercise every day."

While some people become more scrupulous about their health after surviving cancer, others take Rancic's approach that life is too short to live the Hollywood way.

"On my way here I ate a sandwich in the car; I eat lots of bread and different things and I don't exercise as much." Rebel.

Good for her. Sad that it took a brutal disease to bring Rancic to this realization, though...

If you had survived cancer, do you think you'd become more, or less, health conscious?

Mom Breastfeeds Five-Year-Old In Public

I'll breastfeed Until she's ten

Mom Breastfeeds Five-Year-Old In Public

Is there a socially acceptable age to wean a child? An Australian mom who breastfeeds her soon-to-be five year old in public doesn't think so.

According to an article in the Daily Mail, 51-year-old mom of three, Maha Al Musa, still nurses on demand, and is prepared to do so until her daughter turns 10 if necessary.

She will stop when her daughter wants to stop. So far that hasn't happened.

Like Jamie Lynne Grumet, the controversial face of the now infamous TIME magazine cover, Musa has been met with stares and disdain for her decision to practice extended breastfeeding, at least in public. But Grumet defended her position, claiming she herself was breastfed until the age of six.

"I believe it helps boost her immune system," said Maha, whose other two children were weaned at age two. "To this day, she is very rarely ill and her temperament is calmer and more relaxed than the other children."

Should moms who choose to breastfeed their children past a certain age continue to do so in public?
