Can your Whiz Kid Win "Solve for Tomorrow" STEM Challenge?

$500,000 in Samsung Tech for Canadian schools

Can your Whiz Kid Win "Solve for Tomorrow" STEM Challenge?

STEM education for children

Calling all kids and their teachers! Are you up to solving real-world problems using your STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills?

If you or your students are between grades 6-12, you could win all the glory and a share of $500,000 worth of Samsung tech for your school. Plus, the grand prize winners will have Mitch and Greg from AsapSCIENCE drop by for an ultimate science experience…

To participate, here’s what you need to do:

  • identify a community problem that you and your students feel passionate about
  • use STEM subjects to solve it

Click and submit. That’s all there is to it.

With careers in STEM increasingly in demand, it’s more vital than ever for kids today to get excited and involved in such projects.

Time and again, we are shown the immense potential our children have to create and innovate in their own right. Some students - like this young guy - don’t even wait until adulthood to come up with solutions that radically transform the lives of people in their communities.

“We hope the Solve for Tomorrow Challenge will help inspire students about the possibilities of STEM, encouraging them to reach their full potential and strengthen their communities,” said Mark Childs, Chief Brand Officer at Samsung Electronics Canada. “Plus, they’ll have the opportunity to win incredible technology and experiences for their school.”

Solve For Tomorrow is a partnership between Samsung Canada, AsapSCIENCE, The Learning Partnership, and Let’s Talk Science.

The contest closes 30 November 2015. To enter, or to find out more, visit solvefortomorrow.ca and follow #SamsungSolve on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for updates.

Meantime, to get you and your students fired up, check out this video of mindblowing science facts courtesy of AsapSCIENCE.

Beloved Auntie Sues Nephew Over Injured Wrist

You can pick your friends…

Beloved Auntie Sues Nephew Over Injured Wrist

Every now and then, a lawsuit comes along that is so ridiculous, it must be true. Such is the case of the Manhattan auntie who is suing her own nephew for $127,000.

What, you ask, was his crime? Did he walk off with her Hermes clutch? Her prized DeBeers? No, he greeted her too enthusiastically at his eighth birthday party, and hurt her wrist in the process.

According to 54-year-old HR manager Jennifer Connell, the damage from that overzealous hug in 2011 has left her life in tatters. To this day, she struggles to “hold a plate of hors d'oeuvres” and manage the stairs to her third-floor New York walk-up. (Because we all know the wrist bone is directly connected to the leg bone.)

“All of a sudden he was there in the air, I had to catch him and we tumbled onto the ground,” went Connell’s testimony. “I remember him shouting, ‘Auntie Jen I love you,’ and there he was flying at me.”

The lawsuit claims that young Sean Tarala, now 12, should be held accountable for his “unreasonable” behaviour.

As he sat in court with his father, Sean, whose mom died last year, looked 'confused.' And no wonder.  After all, why would dear Auntie Jen try to take her own family members to the cleaners? Perhaps there is more to the story than meets the eye. And - call it a hunch - perhaps that $127,000 has something to do with it.

Connell maintains that her nephew should have known better than to greet her in this manner, i.e. the manner of a 50-pound boy who hasn’t seen a relative he loves in a while.

She says negligent; I say accident. She says careless; I say caring. After all, how many nephews get genuinely excited to see their aunts and uncles?

At the time Connell never admitted that she was hurt because she “didn’t want to ruin his birthday.” Fair enough. Then she should have quietly headed straight from the party to the local hospital to get that baby X-rayed and put in a cast.

She didn’t want to ruin the boy’s party, yet she had no qualms about waiting two years before dropping a lawsuit on his family.

This Photo of a Little Girl in Water Has Everybody Confused

Trompe-l'œil

This Photo of a Little Girl in Water Has Everybody Confused

Remember THE dress? The one that caused the internet to flip out over the course of a couple days. Was it blue? Was it white and gold? Everyone it seemed had a differing opinion and would swear to the death that what they saw was legit.

No one could agree - until science finally settled it.

Well, there's a new debate in town, and this one has already had 4 million views on Imgur with people puzzling over a photo known as 'Waterception.'

Is the little girl immersed in water, or simply splashing in it?

On one hand, bubbles appear to be coming out of her nose (which suggests she's underwater), or are they merely droplets caused by her splashing in shallow water?

The good people at TechInsider have studied the image closely and made a few observations:

Her ponytail appears dry and is not floating. Her head doesn't look submerged.

Conclusion: the use of a filter on Instagram is responsible for messing with our eyes and making it appear as though the tot is underwater when, in fact, she is splashing in shallow water.

Or is she?
