The Olympics are so inspiring aren’t they?
It’s such a delight to watch the athletes who’ve dedicated their lives to sport cross the finish lines and score winning goals, to see their families cheering them on from the sidelines, and then there’s the sportsmanship that could bring you to tears with pride. Canada has been well-represented both on and off the medal stand, and that’s pretty awesome if you ask me, and the many good news stories will continue to inspire us for years to come.
But for now, I’m concentrating on the outfits because OBSESSED.
I’ve already told you about my love for the figure skater-inspired dresses, but how can we forget the medals? At the end of the day, they’re really what it’s all about, aren’t they? After watching both our men’s and women’s hockey teams take home gold, I started thinking about all the gold, silver, and bronze gorgeousness that we can be wearing to feel almost like Olympians ourselves!
And here I am, watching the medal presentation and writing this post. Possibly with a beer in my hand.
Sure, there’s gold, silver or bronze jewelry but don’t forget about the other ways you can add these metallics into your wardrobe! Why not take a silver manicure for a spin, or sport a gold-sequined tee? Look for bronze buttons on your blazers, or grab belts and other accessories in medal-inspired metals.

Keep your jeans looking hot with this icy trick, and earn a gold medal in style with a pair of these boots.
An Olympic figure skater I am not.
Actually, I’m no kind of figure skater. You can ask pretty well anyone and they will tell you that my days of skating are long behind me. On a recent trip to the Halifax Emera Oval (if you’re ever here during the winter, I’ll take you skating and we can get Beavertails!), I had cause to celebrate over simply *not* falling. My friend fell, and she broke her wrist during that trip, so that kind of sucks…
If you’re reading this, my dear friend, please find solace knowing that you can at least look like an Olympic figure skater. We’ll find a dress to match your pink cast!
But, I digress.
Since I work a lot and have a child who thinks he owns the TV, most of my Olympic following has happened via internet searches and a lot of streaming CBC coverage with colleagues. Next to hockey, my favourite sport to watch is figure skating. The grace, the poise… sigh. Things I don’t have. I actually swoon every time I see the ladies in their skating garb — the dresses are so beautiful. Never mind the fact that these women are amazing athletes, I get totally distracted by all the sparkle and pretty.
If, like me (and my friend), you are not exactly Olympic-pairs ready but you appreciate a great dress, you’re in luck because I found some skater-inspired dresses that’ll make you want to triple-axle your way over to the checkout! Look for dresses with a fit-and-flare shape and pair 'em with ankle booties and funky jewelry for daytime looks, and dress 'em up at night by slipping into your heels and spinning your hair into an updo.

Have you ever heard the phrase “Good Maritime Weather,” and wondered what it meant? If you have, I am here to tell you. Maritime weather is the kind that gives you whiplash as you try to follow the low pressure system across your driveway in the morning—that’s how fast this shit changes. In the run of a week here in Halifax, we can have everything from +10 and sunny to 30 mm of rain, and then nose-dive to -25 with the wind chill and 20cm of snow on the ground during the winter months. Fun, right? *Sigh*
Finding jackets and boots that can get me through a Maritime winter and its MANY ups and downs, slush, and salt is important, but it’s also damn near impossible.
Two years ago for Christmas, my parents bought me a pair of Hunter boots in Original Black Gloss. I’m a big fan of wellies, and this pair was no exception. A bit more grown up than my old yellow and navy polka dot pair, I’ve gotten Mom and Dad’s money’s worth out of these rubber boots—one hundred times over. For one thing, the black gloss pair goes with everything. I don’t feel goofy wearing them with my pencil skirt for the commute to work, and with my fleece welly socks inside, my toes stay warm and dry in the winter slush and snow. They’re cute with jeans, I can wear leg warmers when I’ve got leggings or panty hose on, and they’re actually super comfortable. I’ve even worn them with a onesie pajama set. In public. True story (this is why I'm single).
Plus, I can out-splash Finley and that is probably the most important thing ever, really.
The boots come in a gazillion colours and also in some dressier styles (can you say WEDGE-HEEL WELLIES, OMG!), plus you can wrap your head around the $140-ish price tag when you consider this: you can wear them every day of the year if you want to. They’re literally an all-season boot! Wear your wellies in spring with a striped dress and trench, pair ‘em with tights and a sweater dress for winter, and, of course, jeans and a sweater in the fall! I wear my boots with everything. How many items are in my closet that I can say that about? Pretty well none—except underwear . . . and I don’t keep them in my closet.
If Hunter boots are a little steep for your liking (the $160 price tag is why I don’t own every colour I’m drooling over), there are loads of inexpensive wellies out there, and you can swap welly socks for the three-for-$10 leg warmers at stores like Ardene! Perfect!
Wear wellies with every outfit you own, with whatever you would wear any other pair of boots with, and keep your toesies warm and dry while looking adorable. Now go splash in some puddles, you fabulous thing, you.
