Is Eating Meat Really As Bad For You As Smoking?

A Nutrition Reality check

Is Eating Meat Really As Bad For You As Smoking?

is eating meat worse than smoking

Eating meat and dairy will kill you as fast as smoking 20 cigarettes a day. That's the alarmist message of a study recently published by the University of Southern California's Davis School of Gerontology.

Researchers found that people who ate diets high in animal protein in middle age were at a high risk of dying early. As high as that of a regular smoker.

“There’s a misconception that because we all eat, understanding nutrition is simple," said lead researcher Dr. Valter Longo. "But the question is not whether a certain diet allows you to do well for three days, but can it help you survive to be 100?”

Longo claims that animal protein can be particularly harmful as we age, increasing our risk of contracting diabetes or even cancer. According to an article in Global, the findings have since been derided by health and medical experts for being unsubstantiated, particularly the dramatic parallel drawn between eating meat and smoking.

The sample of 6,318 American between 50 and 65 years old were followed for over two decades; 74 per cent of those with diets heavy on protein were likely to die younger than those with a lower protein consumption.

However, the sample didn't take into account socioeconomic or preexisting health factors. The study also failed to differentiate between protein such as a skinless chicken breast or steamed fish and bacon or sausage.

My ethos is everything in moderation. And that includes bacon. Who wants to live to 100, anyway...

See how a teacher managed to lose weight while eating nothing but this fast food.

What do you think of these findings?

Mom Asleep On Bus: Let Sleeping Moms Lie?

If you saw this scenario played out, what would you have done?

Mom Asleep On Bus: Let Sleeping Moms Lie?

mother falling asleep on bus

No one does dog-tired like a mom. So what do you do when she drifts off while in public with her children? If you're this awesome being, you get the fellow mom's back and let her catch some Zs while you mind her kid. Sadly, that's not what happened on board a bus near Philadelphia.

According to an article in Jezebel, though a passenger filmed the mom passing out while her daughter tried to rouse her, no one called 911 or took any other means to report the incident to authorities.

And that is the truly disturbing part of the story. Clearly the mom had issues, likely drug related, that left her barely conscious on the bus.

"When you have a person doing the 'heroin nod' and a little girl is trying to hold her head up, that's horrifying," said Police Chief Tom Nestel.

We live in an age where people are so reluctant or afraid to get up in people's affairs—especially in people's parenting. But when we turn a blind eye, children are ultimately the ones who suffer.

An anonymous tip-off to the police or bus driver might have made a difference to the mom and her daughter.

If it takes a village, then why are its residents in hiding? Do you consider this dad's actions free-range or a felony?

Ever got up in anyone's parenting business? If so, what was the outcome? Spill it.

Meet Lammily: The Answer To Barbie

Move over Barbie, there's a new girl in town and she's based on real life proportions

Meet Lammily: The Answer To Barbie

lammily the non barbie doll

Barbie has long been a bad word in parenting circles, so it's a wonder that it's taken so long for someone to come up with an alternative that little girls will want to play with. That day has come, finally.

According to an article in the BBC, Lammily is the brainchild of Nickolay Lamm, an American artist who designed the anti-Barbie based on the average measurements of a 19-year-old American girl.

"What if fashion dolls were made using standard human body proportions? This is the question I asked myself after comparing fashion dolls to typical body proportions," wrote Lamm on the website he used to crowdfund his project, which has already raised the $95,000 needed to bring Lammily to life.

And all the while, Mattel acted like a modern-day Frankenstein, defending its creation by saying Barbie's strange shape was never intended to be realistic, but simply intended to "make play easier." Sorry, not buying it.

Enter Lammily, the breath of fresh air doll sporting casual wear and minimal makeup. The every girl. We say Bring. Her. On.

Although Barbie's proportions are ludicrous, that hasn't stopped this woman from trying to become the living embodiment of the ubiquitous doll.

We loved this Imgur post that reveals what Barbie looks like the morning after a big night out.
