Blanket scarves first gained popularity at then end of 2013, when ZARA came out with its famous tartan/plaid blanket scarf. By 2014, other retailers were selling copies of the infamous ZARA scarf, and a trend was born – everyone and their sister owned this scarf! Since then - other prints and designs have been introduced - and the scarves continue to be in demand.

What differentiates a blanket scarf from a regular scarf? Blanket scarves are extra large, square-shaped and made of a lightweight and super warm acrylic material.  Because of its large size, there are a multitude of ways to wear them: hanging straight down, wrapped around the neck, draped like a poncho - (click here to see some of the ways I've styled them). And because they're so light, you can stuff them in a bag and carry them around when you're not wearing them. With the cold spell we've been having recently -my favorite way of wearing it has been with it covering my mouth and nose - often anchored in place with my sunglasses. The picture below was taken last week, when the temperature with windchill was -21 C. The acrylic blanket scarf had all the warmth of a fleece scarf, without the bulkiness.

And even though blanket scarves are a "trendy" item - I've been stocking up on quite a few (four to be exact). Not only are they the perfect winter accessory - they also work well as travel blankets! On a recent trip - I rolled 3 up into my carry-on bag - my kids and I were SO warm and cozy on the chilly airplane!
