Shopping Vintage Décor

Vintage bottles add style to any space.

Shopping Vintage Décor

When I was young I loved visiting my grandparents in The Valley. Their houses, first in a town aptly called Paradise, and later in Ernest Buckler’s home in Bridgetown were old, beautiful and packed with antiques. I loved exploring all of the rooms, peeking inside of closets and snooping in cabinets. There was a treasure around every corner. One thing I loved was the collection colourful tiny bottles that lined the window sills.

Vintage is all the rage right in design right now {again}. In my world, it has always been is style. I started collecting vintage pieces in my teens. Shopping for vintage decor is economical, environmentally friendly and brings a sense of history and style to your home that shopping ‘new’ does not offer. One of my favourite things to collect are glass milk bottles.

Vintage bottles look so pretty in a simple grouping:

and they are great for displaying blooms.

I love the simplicity of this flower arrangement in my dining room:

Next time you wander through an antique market or a garage sale, keep your eyes open for vintage glass. Bring some home and add a liitle history to your space.

Kitchen Reno Update

A Backsplash Adds Splash

Kitchen Reno Update

My kitchen reno that I thought would last for 3-4 weeks is now in its fifth month. The cabinets went in quickly but I had an issue with my counter which held things up for ages. Then barfy children and life in general got in the way of everything else. Our beautiful backsplash was finally installed last week.

The backsplash has added a new step to the reno though. The colours do not match the existing wall colour, which is Behr’s Salty Tear.

So I am going to change it to my favourite Benjamin Moore blue, Harbor Haze.

I still have to choose light fixtures. I am leaning towards this lovely one from Union Lighting. So simple and stylish. I’ll take two please.

I also have to buy the fabric for window treatments and for a huge DIY memo board over the desk area. I have already selected the two fabrics, but I will save them for another post. In my wildest fantasies, I would also replace the stove, dishwasher and floors. But those will just have to wait.

I think a kitchen needs to be styled like any other room and love shopping for the perfect accessories. Art is no exception. I wanted a piece of art for my counter so I came up with this simple piece:

I need to change the mat in the larger frame and I want the small photo to be a picture of both of my boys eating something messy, but you get the idea!

I can’t wait until the final details come together so I can share my new beautiful kitchen with you!

DIY Photo Display

Decorating With Photographs

DIY Photo Display

Photographs are one of the easiest and inexpensive ways to personalize a space. When I was redecorating Jessie's room, I wanted to incorporate some photos but I also wanted to add a little pattern to the space. For around $70.00 I was able to create a unique and playful photo display.

What You Need:

1. four large frames {I used the Ikea ribba 8x10s}
2. photo mounting squares
3. co-ordinating patterned paper
4. black and white photos*
5. a ruler to measure placement

How To:
Carefully line up a photo on a sheet of patterned paper {play around with the placement until you are happy with the look}, then tape in place. I like to lay the mat over the paper and check with a ruler to make sure everything looks even.

I think this project is perfect for a child’s room. You can rotate pictures and even switch up the background designs frequently to suit your child’s taste. You could use wallpaper remnants or fabric as the background for the photos too. I'd love to try it for a gallery wall using a variety of frames in different sizes.

I recently wanted to add a bit of spring colour to my mantle so I created a similar look using three beach shots of my sweet little boys. It brightens up the dark hutch, don’t you think?

If you have a wall in your house in need of a liitle colour and personality, this little project is the perfect budget friendly way to brighten your space.

*The beautiful photographs for the project were taken by Racheal McCaig Photography and CL Buchanan Photography. Thanks ladies!
