Just keep swimming

Inspirational Talia Loses Fight Against Cancer

Inspirational Talia Loses Fight Against Cancer

She captured the hearts of many, including talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, but sadly 13-year-old Talia lost her long battle against cancer. Talia Castellano shared her love of makeup with the world during the six years that her body became eaten up by various cancers. Her tutorials delighted the YouTube community, with one video enjoying more than 8,500,000 views.

Admired for her strength and honesty as she underwent various treatments, Talia vlogged in August 2012 to her 700,000 subscribers that the cancer had spread to her bone marrow. "Don't think I'm going to die," she reassured her followers in a video entitled "Bad News."

According to an article in the CBC, the tween documented her tireless battle against cancer. Taking her inspiration to 'just keep swimming,' Talia's dream came true—she not only met her idol Ellen, who provided the voice of the upbeat Dory in Finding Nemo, she also did her makeup!

The star kindly kept in touch with Talia, and even arranged for her to film make-up tutorial videos for cosmetic giant Cover Girl. As dreadful as the cancer made her feel, Talia somehow managed to keep her spirits high. Sadly the 13 year old has now died.

"This year I met a very special girl, and today we lost her," Ellen tweeted. "Sending my heart to Talia's family. I'm so sad."

If you were moved by Talia, feel free to post messages on her page. See how this woman turned her battle with cancer into something beautiful

Toxic School Lunches Kill Children in India

Tragedy Prompts Rioting

Toxic School Lunches Kill Children in India

Toxic School Lunches Kill Children in India

Tragic news in India where more than 22 children between the ages of 5 and 12 have died and others are gravely ill after consuming a school lunch laced with insecticide.

According to an article in the Toronto Star, it's not yet clear whether the toxin was deliberately planted in the food or whether it was improperly prepared at the school in the eastern state of Bihar.

The school located in the village of Gandamal, 80 kilometres north of the capital Patna, had served the children the free meal of rice, lentils, soybeans and potatoes as part of an initiative to combat malnutrition in the country.

Almost immediately the children became violently ill. Many of the children, as well as the school cook, are currently recovering at Patna Medical College Hospital.

Already a criminal negligence case has been lodged against the school headmaster, who fled the scene as soon as the children showed signs of sickness. The incident has prompted rioting, resulting in burned police cars and halting trade in local businesses.

It's thought the food contained organophosphate, an insecticide used on rice and wheat crops, which was not adequately washed off before the food was prepared. The kitchen is currently locked down as part of an investigation.

It remains to be seen whether the contamination was accidental. Either way, it's a horrific incident that will mar India's initiative to feed the country's millions of malnourished children.

Though concerns about the quality of the food and hygienic practices have been raised in the past, there have been no major incidents or outbreaks documented.

Jenny McCarthy To Join 'The View'

she's uninhibited and she's opinionated

Jenny McCarthy To Join 'The View'

Jenny McCarthy To Join 'The View'

So it's official: Jenny McCarthy is set to replace Joy Behar as the next co-host on the ABC weekday talk show The View. But not everyone's cool with it.

According to an article in the New York Post, the actress and former Playboy playmate famous for her anti-vaccine stance will be joining the all-female panel of the talk show created by Barbara Walters in 1997.

"We love [Jenny] because she's fun, she's uninhibited and she's opinionated enough to help us begin the latest chapter in The View history," said Walters. Opinionated—that's what worries me. Her opinions about vaccines and autism aren't exactly sound, and can be dangerously influential, especially once she secures an even bigger media platform.

McCarthy will make her official debut on September 9 at the start of the show's 17th season, though the 40-year-old has made as many as 17 past guest appearances. So you might say she's a natural successor to Behar, despite her Playboy credentials.

It's all change at The View, as another vacancy was announced recently, with Elisabeth Hasselbeck also leaving the show to join Fox News Channel, and Walters herself gearing up for retirement next year. Remaining hosts are Sherri Shepherd and Whoopi Goldberg.

Do you think McCarthy is a good fit to host the show? Who else would you add to the panel?
