The Power Of The Little Black Dress

LBD To The Rescue

Imagine you're four months, three weeks and two days into new mummy yummyhood when the invitation arrives.

Normally you'd jump at the offer, but now you want to run for cover. The invitation bares those dreaded two words for any new mom: cocktail attire.

It doesn't matter if it's a typical affair like a cousin's wedding or a red carpet occasion. You are not living in your typical body! Trading in your spit-up friendly sweats to kick up your heels for a night out may seem daunting. The key to going from gross to glam lies in a few easy tricks.

  Camouflage
Even though you're not the size you were before baby, you're hopefully optimistic about returning to it. Start with a good foundation - Spanx. Whether you're tying down the girls who have grown beyond your comfort level or rocking a muffin top for the first time in your life, there's a Spanx for everything. Spanx don't just camouflage - they contain.

Today's designers offer up numerous styles to choose from that can stylishly disguise your scary areas, whatever they may be. This spring is about volume so seek out shapes like the tulip dress or bubble skirt. Empire or high-waisted looks also fool the eye and elegantly hide the mid-section.

Don't be afraid to go for bright colours or patterns - florals are everywhere now. Find one that suits you. Busy prints create impact without putting too much focus on shape.

  Accentuate
Focus on what you do feel good about in spite of, or as a result of your pregnancy and accentuate it. Some women are thrilled to go from an A cup to a C. If that's you, embrace it!

While shopping, look out for styles that expose areas of the body that are neutral to weight fluctuation - a shoulder or between the shoulder blades for instance. Small hints of skin make a dramatic impression.

  Accessorize
When in doubt, go with a little black dress. You can jolt any LBD into glamoursphere with accessories. Pair the dress with a statement piece like a killer clutch, bangle or hot pair of shoes. You will make an impact without drawing attention to your figure.

Finally, make sure you consider the shoes when shopping for a dress. If heels are out of the question, make sure your dress works with flats. You'll be happier if you're comfortable and camera ready.
