When it’s so cold that it would not be at all surprising to look outside and see a woolly mammoth, or perhaps a Tauntaun amble by, the temptation is to just stay in the house and hibernate, never to leave until spring. Unfortunately, life goes on and outside one must occasionally go.
The question is, how does one stay reasonably fashionable while dressing for winter? We’ve got your best, warmest, and most stylish winter gear that you need to be able to cope with the plummeting temperatures.
Waist-length jackets are cute, but when it’s Hoth-like outside, you need a coat that will keep you warm from head to knees. Forget those gigantically puffy, pastel-coloured ankle length coats from the eighties; nowadays there are many cute, bum-covering coats that will keep you warm, without requiring their own postal codes. Look for a coat with a warm hood so you can keep your head warm without hat-hair. I love this one from Eddie Bauer; it’s stylish and is rated to minus 60. Minus 60! Lord have mercy.
I have fine hair that tends to be staticky in the cold, dry winter air, and so I am not a fan of hats. However, I am a fan of non-frost-bitten ears, and so I love these ear warmers from Mountain Equipment Co-Op that can be worn two ways: over or behind the head, depending on what kind of a hair day it is.
What did I just say? I don’t love hats. But I do often wear my hair up, and for those days, I think this hat from Lululemon would be perfection. Warm ears and cool hair! It also doubles as a neck warmer.
If I am going outside in the bitter cold, I want layers on every square inch of my body, including the 10-12 inches between where my coat ends and my boots begin. For this reason, I am in love with leg warmers. I am lucky enough to have a mother-in-law who knits thigh-high ones for me, but there are also many excellent options on Etsy, as well as these sweet things from Lululemon.
Blanket scarves are the coziest items around. Not only can you wear them as a scarf to keep the icy wind off your neck and face, but you can also use it to snuggle into when you are working at your desk. It’s like a security blanket for stylish women!
