Safety Advisory: IKEA MALM Chests and Dressers

Entrapment Hazard

IKEA MALM dresser recall

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and IKEA North America have issued a safety warning involving IKEA MALM units. If unsecured to the wall, the chests and dressers may tip, posing an entrapment hazard.

IKEA is providing a free anchoring kit for their MALM chests and dressers following the deaths of two young children in 2014. Some 14 others incidents were reported, two of which resulted in injuries.

Customers are advised to inspect any IKEA dressers and chests and to immediately stop using the following units, unless they are securely fastened to the wall:

  • children's units taller than 23 ½ inches

  • adult units taller than 29 ½ inches

To receive a free wall anchoring kit, visit an IKEA store, contact www.IKEA-USA.com/saferhomestogether, or call (888) 966-4532 toll-free in the US.

Around 65 million MALM chests and dressers have been sold worldwide since 2002.
