Cartoonist Nails What It's Like to Become a Dad

Redefining superhero

Fathers_Day_Cartoon

A professional illustrator has captured the highs and lows of what it is to be a first-time father in poignant cartoon called "Father's Days."

"When I said, 'I'm your dad,' it sounded like an apology," says the narrator and artist, known only as Bob.

Fathers are expected to be superheroes who rise to the occasion and save the day. It's an expectation that wears heavy on the shoulders of every new dad, and yet for Bob the reality turned out very different.

"When one question mark disappears, quite often another one springs up to take its place," he says.

"My experience of fatherhood hasn't been anything like what I thought it would be, but that's probably true of all dads."

I won't spoil it for you, but suffice to say right from the word Go, Bob was faced with parenting surprises and challenges he hadn't have anticipated.

In this moving video, one of our cartoonists explains how his experience of fatherhood was unlike anything he had ever expected.

Still, he describes the process of drawing his experience as cathartic, and it's safe to agree the result is a moving, must-watch for all dads and moms alike.

Fatherhood transformed Bob in ways he never expected. In time, he grew to realize that he was never "supposed to be the hero in all of this..."

The honest simplicity of Bob's words and pictures perfectly capture both the beauty and insecurity of what it's like to suddenly find yourself responsible for a tiny human being.

Happy Father's Day to Bob and to all the daddies out there! You are all superheroes in our book.
