Milk goes well with more than just cookies

Recipes That Pair Perfectly With Milk

"Some things just go better with milk Mom," my five-year-old son told me last night. I had just put dinner in front of the kids and had simultaneously asked them what they wanted to drink while reaching in the fridge for the milk that wasn't there.

I had forgotten it, of course. In my post-work-pre-kid-pick-up mad dash through the grocery store, I had grabbed the things we needed for dinner and forgot the milk — in my defense it is always in the very back corner of the grocery store and so easily forgotten.

"We're all out of milk buddy, but Daddy is going to pick it up on his way home." I then offered a whole bunch of other beverage options at which point he made his "better with milk" comment.

It's taco night. In fact, my three-ingredient slow cooker chicken tacos night and he's right, tacos do taste better with milk.

While the kids' glasses sat empty waiting for Daddy to come home with the milk, I sat down to my regular lukewarm dinner and asked (genuinely curious as to what my kids would say) "what else tastes better with milk?" "Cheesy pasta!" my four-year-old daughter yells. By cheesy pasta she means my lightened up baked mac and cheese.

"Sloppy Joes!" my son yelled and at the same time, my nine year old daughter told me "Daddy always drinks milk with your chicken wing soup."

"I think you mean buffalo chicken soup" I said. But she's right — chicken wings do pair well with milk.

"Actually, Mom" my eldest says, "I think my favourite thing to eat with milk is lasagna."

I was surprised. I was certain desserts would outweigh anything I had ever put in front of them for dinner. Honestly, if you asked me, my friend Merry's super chocolatey coca cola cake or her southern peach cobbler would far outweigh everything else as my favourite things to pair with milk. Well, they would be followed closely by a mug full of milky tea with my gingerbread cake.

"What about cookies?" I asked my kids. "Doesn't milk go best with cookies?

At the mere mention of cookies, I started having a craving for my cinnamon oatmeal butterscotch chip cookies or these super yummy honey oatmeal raisin cookies.

Just then my husband walked in the door with the milk I had forgotten, kissed each one of us hello and poured everyone a glass of milk while I started slicing up some oreo brownie cake bars.

Our dinner table suddenly got very quiet with everyone's mouths full of chocolatey dessert and  gulps of milk. Until my son finished his last bite and wiped his chocolate-covered face clean with the sleeve of his shirt and said "see Mom, I told you some things taste better with milk. But I think your cake tasted the best."
