Scott Stratten: UnDaddy

No one is available to take your call

May 21, 2010

It happened recently. My phone rang. I didn't know how to react. Owen (UnJr) was sleeping, it was 10:30 at night and the ring caught me off guard. I texted this person back saying I couldn't talk and asked "what's up?". He replied "nothing" and just wanted to say hi. And that's when it dawned on me. I hate the phone.

Every time my phone rings, I cringe. When I was a kid, when the house phone rang, we all jumped hoping it was for us, and now I don't want it to be.

I engage in conversations with people through an incredible amount of channels everyday: Email, Facebook, Twitter, Text, BlackBerry Chat, in-person and the phone, but it's the phone that makes my skin crawl.

I'm not totally sure why but as I've talked to people about it I realized I'm not alone.

It feels like an interruption in my day, more so than the 400 emails I get per day. especially when I'm with UnJr. I don't want to say to him "hey, someone is calling and may have something more important to say than time with you, please hold".

Maybe I just yearn for the days of a busy signal. Remember that? You called someone, you got the signal and you just simply called back another time.

I'm not sure where this disdain started. Could've been my days as a business coach and talked to 20 clients a week, every week. Maybe it's the fact with all the other methods of communication, I control when I engage, and the phone tries to interrupt me.

What about you? Maybe you love the phone. I certainly love it when I can talk to my brother in Texas when we haven't connected in a while, but even then we only stay on for as long as we need to tell a story about a recent occurrence then depart.

What do you think?

Leave your comments below, just don't call me about it.

Behind The Blog

Scott Stratten is an author, speaker and ranter who runs one of the most successful viral marketing companies in the world. Yet he still has no idea why the teacher won’t bump his son's grades to an A+ and is appalled he has to pay for his own coffee.

But it was after gaining custody of his son that Scott realized, regardless of his own business success, it meant nothing if he wasn't able to succeed as a dad.

When Scott started hanging out with the YummyMummyClub crew in real life and on Twitter he found himself defending a woman’s right to breastfeed in public and rallying behind moms who are overworked and underpaid.  Since he was able to offer a dad-perspective on these hot button topics, he figured he should write a blog.

Welcome to UnDaddy.
