Mother's Day Message from Author Danielle Raine

May 08, 2010

Hello and Happy Mother's Day to all you yummy mummies and a special shout out to my mom, a.k.a. Nana Deanna! I would like to share a unique Mother's Day message from an awesome new author to help mark this special day.

When I say the word 'housework', what comes to your mind? Do you sigh or cringe? Do you deny and binge? I don't know a single mom out there who actually enjoys doing housework. That being said there's probably some of you out there, however rare, who actually like cleaning house!  I must admit housework has been the bane of my existence. My Twitter profile states, "Housework meh, networking yeh!" and my youngest has even noted that I only clean the whole house when people are staying over. Whatever.

As a teen I recall my Dad's frequent statement, "Don't let your mother be a drudge!" which was supposed to encourage me to help out with all the household chores. I hoped, as I vacuumed, that when I grew up the typical household would have it's housework run by Jetson like robots. Instead of dishpan hands, all housewives would spend their housework-free hours playing with their children, reading and crafting - all the while sporting lovely manicures! Flash forward to 20 years of marriage, (May 19th- Happy Anniversay Mel!), two boy plus two cats and well, the household chores are not all automated. I love my whisper quiet dishwasher and central vac but basically I still have to get my hands dirty. Sigh. I know, this is where an attitude adjustment needs to come into play. I need to change my mood about changing the sheets. Face it, the laundry, dirty dishes and dust are not going to dissappear are they? This is where author Danielle Raine has come to save the day! She found me (and my Twitter disclaimer) and promised to get rid of my housework blues! Read on for some motivation and inspiration.

A Mother's Day Message from Danielle Raine

Author of

Housework Blues - A Survival Guide

It goes without saying that us mums deserve our annual day off.
After the generous and selfless service we provide all year - we’ve more than earned a spell of being pampered, spoiled and waited on, hand and foot. All we need to do is relax and graciously receive the cards and flowers, the hugs and chocolates, the lukewarm cuppa and the over-buttered toast.

Yet, beyond enjoying the respite and attention, there’s something else we can do on Mother's Day, to recharge our maternal batteries...

If your family have presented you with a calm and restful day - you can use this lull in the usual madness to reflect on what this mothering business is all about, to contemplate the blessings and the highs of motherhood. You can take this opportunity to remind yourself why being a mummy really is so yummy.

In the hectic realm of motherhood, it’s easy to become so absorbed with all the chores and needs of family life that we forget what - or rather who - we're doing it all for.  So why not use Mother's Day as a reminder to refocus on the reasons you embarked on this incredible journey? Take a good look at your children, not as sources of needs-to-be-met or flaws-to-be-fixed, but to appreciate the wonderful, amazing people that you have done so much to create. Consider how glad you are to have them in your life. Step back and see the bigger picture - the unique and powerful role you play in their lives. Most of all, call to mind the wonders you get from the deal.

Motherhood can certainly be exhausting, frustrating, demanding, at times infuriating, but in return, it can offer the best moments of your life. It is hugely rewarding - or at least it can be, if we remember to notice.

So, just for today, try to see past the constant laundry and meal-making, look beyond the considerable effort and energy it takes to raise children. Just for this one day, ignore all the stuff that can sometimes, understandably, get you down. Forget all that, and just remember the highlights, the gems, the truly amazing benefits of being a mother.

This refreshed perspective can actually enhance your enjoyment of Mother’s Day. More importantly, though, it can help you cope more positively when the demands of motherhood resume tomorrow, (if not sooner...). So, the effects of this yearly reflection, this gift to yourself, are likely to last far longer than the chocolates and flowers.

Happy Mother's Day!

Danielle Raine
