How To Protect Your Family If The Unthinkable Happens

What happens if the unthinkable happens–you die and there isn't enough money to take care of your children financially. #YMCCommunity member Carla Young saw this happen to her neighbour and it made her realize she wants to give her child the stability of staying where she has the support of her friends and the community. Here are her tips on finding the right insurance for your family.

Since I became a parent, one of the scariest thoughts—second only to losing my child—is the thought of my child losing me. What would happen to my daughter? How would my husband cope? Would there be enough money to take care of her financially?

It seems like it would never—could never—happen, but it can and it does.

It happened to my neighbor. Having only recently moved in, I barely knew her, but I heard the whispers and fragments of conversations as people shared the sad news of this family, these children who were experiencing what I dreaded most for my child.

Words like “huge debt,” “sole breadwinner,” and “selling everything” were used to describe the situation. And of course, the big one—“no insurance.” A short time later, a For Sale sign went up in front of their house and the family was gone.

It made my heart ache for them and it made me grateful that at least I could give my child the stability of staying where she has the support of her friends and the community of parents and teachers to see her through the unthinkable.

All because when she was born, we sat down at our kitchen table and figured out what we would need if one or both of us died. This was the one thing we knew we had to do.

Here are my tips on finding the right life insurance.

She is a believer that the best business training isn’t in the classroom or the boardroom, but the playroom where she hones her business skills on a daily basis. Want marketing help? Try upselling a toddler on carrot sticks instead of cookies. Need to negotiate a contract? Try talking a reluctant preschooler into washing her hair.
