Cakes are my big splurge for my kids' birthdays. I spend about a week on them from start to final execution. This Minecraft duo was for my son's 9th birthday and were meticulously hand painted--with love.

I started decorating cakes in high school at Baskin Robbins. My first "big" cake was my wedding cake and now I bake for family and friends. This year my daughter turned 15 and was going to see Cinderella with some friends. So this is the cake I made for her.

About 3 years ago, I contacted a "teenage baker" (only 17 yo) to bake a cake for my brother at the last minute. Since then, she has made almost all of my 5 children's cakes for their birthdays - always themed based. This one was for a "Frozen" themed party.

We always do a theme cake, my daughter never asks for much but she asks for her fave party each year. My wonderful friend Cassandra has made her cake every year from her very first birthday. It's become just as much for me as for her. I love seeing her face light up when she sees her special cake.

So much fun - we dug out all the decorations, and thanks to Pinterest, we had all kinds of fun food and game ideas for the party. He absolutely loved it!! My daughter's birthdays are only a month apart so, we have a joint birthday party and I get a cake made for the party but, on their actual birthday, we try to do something that they enjoy. My 4 year old is a horse fanaticm and this is what I made for her.

I took the Wilton Cake Decorating courses just so I could do my boys' birthday cakes myself!

I've done everything from Lightning McQueen, Mater, Mario and Angry Birds for my son. It takes a lot of love and patience to create a cake during the dead heat of summer, but the light in his eyes makes it all worthwhile!

I made the cake and cupcakes, my sister made the beautiful cookies! My daughter's 2nd party was featured on Hostess With The Mostess blog. I'm so proud of how it turned out and on a budget!

- Julie D.
I have made almost every one of both my daughters' cakes as well as my husband's. It is their choice for what kind of cake they would like, some being the typical Barbie to the custom "could I have a camouflage purse?" This cake was for my youngest when she turned 8, which I finished after completing a 25 mile bike race in the rain. Pretty chuffed it got finished, and that it was exactly what she asked for!

I always use local home bakers to bake cakes for my kids. In May my DD turned 3. She wanted to feed the birds at our local conservation area. We had a BBQ, cake and hit the trails to feed some birds. Her theme this year was "little birdie". Loot bags were homemade birdseed feeders.

He loves lego, so we asked our baker Bunkins Baked Goods to run with it. She went above and beyond when she brought this. He went crazy over it.
