DIY: Fabric Sideboard

A Beautiful Way To Keep Things Hidden

My main floor family room had this sideboard where we house the big bad plasma (which I am not really a fan of, but I digress). Although, lovely on its own filled with books and pretty things, it did not look good housing all of the techie junk that comes with Televisions. Not to mention having a babe who wanted to pull everything out of the cabinet. I have a beautiful Montauk Ottoman in this room that was being cheapened by the look of this sideboard- I knew I had to do something.

Here is where it begins:

I bought 3 Yards of White Linen Fabric. I made sure it was good quality and heavy enough that it could stand up well.

I measured the size of my cabinet. LXW and Height. I cut about 3 inches larger on both ends and an inch longer at the bottom. This left me enough room to create a hem. With my magic no sew tape which you can find at IKEA in the fabric section I hemmed the sides and bottom of the fabric to the exact size I needed for the right fit.

I keep a real stock of ribbon in my home office and was lucky enough to have this simple black sateen ribbon that I could use to add as decorative trim at the bottom of the hem. I didn’t want to go over board but felt that the fabric needed a little something. With fabric glue I simply placed the ribbon on the white linen and created two perfect lines for detail.

I purchased a couple of boxes of Velcro Tape and placed strips at the top of the fabric, making sure that the soft side of the velcro was stuck to the fabric and the coarse side was stuck to the cabinet. Make sure you get your first pieces of velcro close enough to the edge so that you don’t have any lose fabric at the top sides.

Then, carefully I lined the fabric up to the top of the cabinet and secured the velcro tape on and VOILA!

I do recommend having another person help you with placing the fabric with sticky velcro tape to the table or cabinet you are using, it will make sure you are well aligned.
