When I was a Girl Guide leader and my husband a Boy Scout leader, we spent way too much time planning food for our camps. The kids probably would have been happy to eat boxed mac ‘n cheese and store bought cookies, but that’s just not how we roll. I wish I’d thought of these campfire treats back then, because they would have been a huge hit, and made a nice change from s’mores.

Sweet & Salty Fudge 'Campfire' Treats

Ingredients:

Chocolate Fudge

1/4 cup heavy (whipping cream)
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips

Campfires

1 batch fudge (above)
1 bag pretzel sticks
Handful red and orange gummy bears

Directions

  • Make the fudge by putting the chocolate chips in a small bowl. Put the cream in a heatproof jug ( a glass measuring cup is great) then heat the cream in the microwave until just beginning to boil – about 45 – 60 seconds on medium-high power.

  • Pour the hot cream over the chocolate chips and let sit for 4 minutes. Stir until smooth.

  • Let the chocolate and cream mixture sit at room temperature, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes (it will harden as it cools).

  • While fudge is cooling, snap some of the pretzels in half so you have ‘logs’ of different lengths. With clean scissors, snip the gummy bears in half.

  • Make the campfires by scooping out 2 tsp sized portions of the fudge, placing them about 3 inches apart on a parchment lined baking tray.

  • Stick about 12 pretzels of differing lengths into the fudge base, and stick three pieces of gummy bears on top.

  • Let sit until fudge is completely hardened (you can put them in the fridge to speed things up).

Makes 8 – 10 campfire treats, depending upon size. Recipe can easily be multiplied.
