Blogging for Fun

I know, we’re all busy juggling work and kids, with the occasional load of laundry and trips to the grocery store thrown in.

I don’t know about you, but I need to squeeze sleep in there somewhere too. But something’s missing. What about something for me?

I’ve tried cooking and language classes, scrapbooking, photography. I have a shelf full of half finished projects. It’s not that I didn’t like these hobbies, I just found them hard to do; hard to find the time or money or in some cases, talent.

Then I stumbled upon blogging. It seemed ideal for these reasons:

No schedule to meet. There’s no need to rush through dinner in order to get to a class, you can contribute to your blog when you want to: before the family gets up in the morning, when your kids have quiet time, even while watching TV.

No enforced dress code. No special clothes or shoes are needed. Heck, you don’t even have to shower. Since you blog from your personal computer, you can do it while hanging out in your PJs.

No fees. Beyond your computer and Internet access (which you must have or you wouldn’t be reading this), there are no additional costs. No registration fee. No supplies to buy.

No skills required. You don’t need to be an English major or take a course.

Blogging allows me to escape into my own world and meet people with the same or similar interests. Whether you want to just record your own thoughts, share events with family or communicate with a larger group of people, blogging is something anyone can do.

Okay, you know all that. Maybe you’ve even read a blog or two. But how do you start? It’s easier than you think.  Here are some ideas:

Register an account with a blogging service. There are a number of free services available, like Wordpress or Blogger.

Create and customize your page. Most services provide you with templates making it easy for you to personalize you page. Change the colours and fonts. Add a photo of yourself. Give your blog a name. This is your world.

Write your first post. Decide what your blog will be about. Your blog can focus on a theme, like Yummy Mummy Cassandra Sadeck’s Literalicious which focuses on books. Or you can do as I do and just write about events that happen or thoughts or just about anything you want, like a digital journal.

Write, write, write. If you’re sharing your blog, your readers want to hear from you. Write often and they’ll come back.

Promote yourself. Once you’ve started your blog, let people know. Come back and list yourself on the Yummy Mummy blog page or in directories like The Mom blogs.

Above all, just write and share and enjoy!

With a background in advertising, Carrie Anne Badov left the agency life to spend more time with her three energetic and active kids (age 6, 4, & 21 months). At home in Toronto she works for advertising agencies testing their Client’s online communications; a cool job, according to her kids, especially when games are involved. Carrie Anne volunteers at her children’s school and when time allows she works on her children’s story ideas in the hopes of some day seeing one of them published. She is very fortunate to have a deliciously, wonderful hubby that supports and understands her and gives amazing back rubs.
