8 Great Podcasts to See You Through 2019

Listening is the new watching

Six years ago I returned home with my newborn daughter and entered into the eerie silence of new motherhood. I felt both constantly needed and full of time to fill - the strange balance of doing everything and nothing in those fresh and uncertain months of first-time motherhood.

During that time I was introduced to podcasts, the beautiful symphony of audio entertainment soothed my soul and re-energized me. I welcomed podcast hosts into my home each day, eager to hear their stories and connect in some way.

I’ve listened to a variety of podcasts in many genres, and have compiled a list of some of my favourites. There’s a podcast for everyone, and who knows, maybe you’ll find your new best friend below.

The Longest Shortest Time

The title of this podcast captures the essence of parenthood in four simple words. This award-winning podcast, hosted by Andrea Silenzi discusses parenthood in all its forms. The Longest Shortest Time features an inside look at some fascinating guests, and offers insightful content about hot button topics, culture, and parenthood.

Zen Parenting

A mind-opening and enlightening podcast about self-awareness. Zen Parenting draws from personal experience, research, and pop culture, and creates an entertaining and often illuminating show that aims at allowing us to feel greater compassion for ourselves, and others too.

Jesus and Jollof

Featuring Luvvie Ajayi and Yvonne Orji, two proudly Nigerian women, this podcast is about all the things they love, peppered with stories and a lot of laughter. Ajayi and Orji discuss everything and anything, from Nigerian dating rules, to turning a case of plagiarism into a NYT bestselling book.

This mega-popular, and fairly new podcast is hosted by the loveable Dax Shepard. There are plenty of A-list guests on this show, and a lot of fun, entertaining, and illuminating conversations happen too.

Personal Best

This CBC podcast “turns tiny goals into grand adventures.” Each guest on the show has a personal goal they’d like to meet, from Oriana who can’t tell a lie and says its hurting her family members, to Julia who can’t flirt over text. Guests hope to improve themselves, but through discussion new conclusions and revelations often come out.
