Judy, the winner of the Barbie You Can Be A Journalist contest has written a number of articles for YMC.ca and she is sharing with us, her very own, unique writing process.
She has many passions and has researched and written on a few of them this year.
Below Judy shares not only her steps to writing but also how her approach and interests have changed throughout this program.
During the Barbie, You Can Be a Journalist program, I had a chance to write about things that I had a passion for as well as writing fiction, research articles, inspirational articles/stories and much more.
There is one type of document I’m still not interested in and that is writing resumes!
Most of the time when I write, I’m in my bedroom/personal office. I listen to music playing from my iPad or just silently humming by myself. I also write outside of my house for fun and to keep my mind on something that I like to do.
If you want to know how I write, the majority of the time, I type on my computer or iPad, and I even write on lined sheets of paper or in my beautiful notebooks.
Once my work is complete, my mom helps out by editing it for me, and sometimes I edit them by myself.
Before I was a part of the Barbie “You Can Be Anything” Journalist program, I always tried to stick to one type of writing, fiction. But after I had the opportunity to write about a variety of topics, I found that other forms of writing can also be very fascinating and fun. I’ve learned to enjoy writing research articles and editorial/opinion articles, these are new for me! Now, I’m actually interested and passionate in writing in many different types and genres. This has been a great experience for me and a huge learning opportunity!
During my mentorship with Erica Ehm from YMC, I learned extremely important things about journalism, like being confident when I am interviewing so I make the person whom I’m interviewing feel confident, too. I also learned that I must always listen to the interviewees and ask open-ended questions in order to get the most interestinganswers.
My writing has definitely improved because of the articles I’ve written and the editing my mom and editing team at YMC has done for me. In addition to this, I have also learned more strategies in writing and how to apply them to my work. My mom said that my writing has improved a lot since I wrote the essay for the Barbie You Can Be Anything Contest!
Writing is a way of exploring the world, and armed with what I learned from my Barbie #YouCanBeAnything mentorship experience, I can hardly WAIT to get started!
