When Those Newborn Days Seem Long, Reconnect With Baby Over Simple Habits

How to stay focused on what's important

They say the days are long but the years are short, and with a toddler and a newborn in the house, this saying has never been more real to me.

Right now, we’re entering the “terrible twos.” My sweet darling boy's independence is growing, he's conquering new challenges, testing his boundaries, and exploring new skills every day. At the same time, we’re also living with that soft, squishy, warm, cuddly, new-to-the-planet, smells-so-good but poops-so-much baby phase. My youngest is my two month-old girl who sticks to Mama like her life depends on it.

Like so many other moms, I’m learning that when I try too hard to keep up with everyone else or maintain an image that's “Pinterest-worthy,” I miss out on living in the moment and making precious memories with my babies. Something important for all of us to remember is that there are no perfect parents and there is no right or wrong way. When it comes to parenting, everyone has an opinion, so it's best to release any expectations for how the day should be and how our lives should look. We have to do what works best for our families.

When all my best efforts fail or when the chaos becomes more than we can handle, there are three fool-proof strategies I rely on to always get us back on track. Maybe they'll help you to refocus on what's really important, too.

1. Get Outside and Get Messy

There’s something about the fresh air that seems to have a magic ability to calm down and re-focus my little ones. We go for walks, run at the park, collect sticks and rocks, and meet little bugs. These excursions often leave us dirty but they also leave us happy. And some quality time together, away from any technology or distractions is good for our souls - mine included. One of the challenges for me is to remember that this is real life and this is all that matters. I want to be fully present for my children’s childhoods. I want to see the wonder in their eyes as they grasp new things in the world and we experience it all together.

2. Have a Soak in the Tub

Ever since the beginning, we’ve always been able to reconnect and start over with a simple bath. I’ve been using the new Baby Dove Tip-to-Toe Wash which is perfect for both my toddler and my newborn. The wash is tearless, the moisture is smooth, and the fragrance is non-existent - exactly how I like it. It's simple and effective, yet still gentle enough for their delicate skin! Plus, I’ve been using Dove products on myself since I was little so I can trust that the gentle cleansing won’t strip their precious skin. Suds and bubbles are equally amazing at washing away toddler temper tantrums, mama frustrations, and messy play dates!

3. Hold them Close

Cuddle on the bed, in the rocking chair or on the couch...it really doesn’t matter, just hold those precious babies close! Remind them how loved and valued they are. In our home, regardless of the craziness that took place, we always end the day with a book and a cuddle because I want them to know that no matter what life throws at us, their spot in our hearts will always be unshakeable and irreplaceable. My arms are their home, to cheer them on, comfort them, embrace them and release them to conquer new heights and longer goals. And the days are too much for them to handle, there will always be a place for them in my arms.

These days are precious and fleeting, but also full and chaotic. Whether it is a day in the dirt or a soak in the bath, you’ve got to find what works for you and take a break whenever you or your precious babes need it. This is the only childhood they’re going to get, so finding simple ways to reconnect is the best way to make the most of it!
