See What Happens When Three Becomes Four

Adjusting to Life With a Three-Year-Old and a Newborn

toddler and newborn

We recently gave a warm welcome to baby Niko Martin Zizek!

He was born at 3:13pm; weighing 8lbs 3oz. and we couldn’t be happier. Gabby has been a great big sister and seems to be adapting to her new role quite well. You always hope that things with baby number two will be smoother and so far that has proven to be true. I do feel more comfortable this time around, a little more secure of what I’m doing and how to handle situations in my sleep deprived haze.

I’m finding that baby Niko and his big sister are pretty similar in their newborn habits so far. He is a pretty good sleeper and hasn’t refused a feed yet!! When it comes to feeding him I’ve found that breastfeeding is working best for the both of us. With Gabby, I began breastfeeding from the start and introduced the bottle at around one month of age. Regardless if you breast or bottle feed, the most important thing is that it works for you and your baby.

At the same time, baby number two does also bring its own set of new challenges: How will Gabby react? Will I be able to manage both a newborn and a three year old? What is grocery shopping or bedtime with two kids under the age of three going to be like when one three-year-old seems to be more than enough?

If I learned anything the first time around it was that parenthood isn’t what I expected; it’s not better, it’s not worse, it’s just different. I think we all have these ideas about what we will and won’t do with our children. Whether it’s the products we use or the parenting methods we enforce, but at the end of the day whatever works works and sometimes it’s the little ones that seem to decide the parenting methods for us. From my experience, I never thought I’d use the TV or DVDs to entertain the kids so that I could get dinner on the table or even go to the bathroom without a kid in tow, and now I do it all the time.

I’m excited to watch little Niko start to grow and learn. It’s only been a couple weeks and he has already changed so much!

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen with your little one so far?
