Rainy Day Boredom Busters for Kids

I always check the $5 bin for movies at Walmart and keep at least one movie hidden away. Not just for rainy days, but snow days as well. I also keep a secret stash of craft supplies. Baking and decorating cupcakes is another fun way to keep them busy.

A white shower curtain liner and dry erase markers! Always a good time.

I tell the kids it is time to clean the house so they will all disappear upstairs and play quieter than mice.

Puddle-jumping followed by a warm bath, homemade salt/flour Play-doh, storybooks and the favorite movie classics I loved as a kid.

We bring out all the paints, canvases, special papers, and lots of brushes. The kids spend hours painting and creating with what is there plus whatever else they want to add. Sometimes calming music and candles add to the atmosphere.

Indoor picnic... We put a blanket down on the living room floor and have a picnic. Sometimes teddy bears and tigers join us, and we get our old records and put them on the record player and dance.

We bundle up and play in the rain - go hunting for the biggest puddles that we can find, dance and sing and when we are all done - bath time to warm up! :)

Pom poms and empty water bottles. Stuff the bottle with Pom poms, empty, repeat! Hours of simple and pure joy for my 18 month old!

I hide puzzle pieces or letter magnets around the house during nap time. When she wakes up, we go on a treasure hunt, and once we have all the pieces we put them together or in order on the fridge. After we are finished I usually hear "Hide them again, Mama!"

We go up the loft where we can watch the rain through the sky light. We get out dad's bongos, ukulele, recorders and keyboard and we make music to accompany the rain.

Indoor playgrounds!

Baking crazy cookies. We start with a basic sugar cookie dough and then add delicious or disgusting ingredients like cranberries or curry powder, butterscotch chips or ketchup. Then we taste test them with "unsuspecting" adults! Lots of fun - and fills up a couple of hours!
