From our bloggers' bedside tables to yours, we have the books that will keep you turning pages well into the night. From non-fiction to comedy to fantasy to historical fiction to YA to food, our bloggers have very varied—and very awesome—taste in reading material.
Wall Candy's Sarah says, "The last book that has kept me up at night is The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom. It is the story of Lavinia, an orphan brought to a Plantation in the late 1700s. It is a heartbreaking and suspenseful story of slavery."
Our New Freakin' Mummy Jen's all-time favourite book is A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry.
Maija—our Canned Soup Mom—says, "Right now I am reading Left Neglected by Lisa Genova. My grandmother sent it to me as a hint that I need to slow down. Professional work-outside-the-home moms will see little bits of themselves in this story, I'm sure!"
Inside Scoop's Sharon tells us that she loves The Hot Mom's Handbook by Jessica Denay. It's "a practical and funny guide with advice from celebrity moms, experts and regular every day moms like me. Oh right…I may also really like this book because something I wrote is in it. Page 143 in case you’re interested."
Our forums expert Heather tells us that she is devouring the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy written by EL James. "Wow...this is the escape I need in my life!" she says.
Our very own EarnestGirl Catherine highly recommends Wild by Cheryl Strayed. "Her journey from lost to found on the Pacific Crest Trail is like a long midnight heart-to-heart."
Ali from Straight Up With a Twist recently loved The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. "This is one of the best YA books I have read. I couldn't put it down. Hazel is somewhat of a medical miracle, and this is the story of what happens when she meets Augustus at a cancer support group. It's funny, it's smart, it's heartbreaking, it's lovely."
Our Sweaty Mummy Dara loved Earth: A Visitor’s Guide to the Human Race by Jon Stewart & The Daily Show for its funny ridiculousness.
Candace, of See Mummy Juggle, says: "I am currently reading A Game of Thrones series from George R.R. Martin and I am on the second book of the series. I love it because it's a mix of history, fantasy and personal narratives. Totally engrossing. I keep telling people to read the book before they watch the series!"
Beauty Busted's Daniel recommends The Ripple Effect: The Fate of Freshwater in the Twenty-First Century by Alex Prud'homme. "One of the best theses I have ever read on the quantity, quality and waste of water on our planet and how "ownership" of water is eroding this resource and making it a commodity. A wake up call for anyone who turns on a tap and thinks the supply is endless."
Our Non-Diet Dietician Sarah says, "This Beautiful Life by Helen Schulman. Loved this one. An easy read. It was just so realistic for this day and age—it was about a family in NYC and the teenage son gets into some trouble at school when a younger girl sends him a provocative video over e-mail. It's raw and SO realistic. Loved it."
Erica recommends The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. "I recently read this sprawling novel. Halfway through I knew it would be one of my favorite all-time books. Set in Hungary during the War, the main character is a young Hungarian man who moves to Paris to study architecture. But life has other plans for him. Riveting and heartbreaking. I dare you not to weep!"
Dr. Kim Foster says, "The best book I’ve read lately is called Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. It’s a historical novel, a murder mystery/thriller set in medieval England, and it’s completely delicious. The writing is fantastic, the characters are wonderfully created, there’s lots of suspense…plus the protagonist/heroine is a female doctor who was trained in Salerno, Italy (historically accurate), so there’s lots of fascinating stuff about medical history (my bias!) and a woven theme of Jewish/Christian/Islamic tension. A multi-layered, well-written story, for sure."
Natalie of In Good Taste says, "Right now I am reading a fabulous book by Susan Semenak called Stories & Recipes from Montreal's Marché Jean-Talon about this great market and its producers, definitely a must to visit and the best place to buy food in Montreal."
I Spy Style's Colleen says, "My night table reading has been pretty fluffy this week! After reading the terribly written and kinda boring Fifty Shades of Grey, I bought the new Sophie Kinsella book I've Got Your Number. It was a weak moment! I needed cotton candy for the mind! And it was totally cute. It was better than most of her books, actually. I'd even venture to say the best yet. I liked Can You Keep A Secret and this was very similar. It started pretty typically but I was quickly caught up in it and the climax (of the book...this is no mommy-porn) had me so enraptured it was 3:45am and I was reading as quickly as possible and I noticed I had even stopped breathing because it was getting in the way of me turning the pages. It was awesome. I love when a book does that! Captivated by a literary carnival treat. I could really go for a deep-fried Oreo, actually."
