The thing I love about music, is that it can instantly bring you back to a certain time and place in your life. A flood of memories can come come rushing back the minute you hear the first few bars of a song.
Music can be your very own personal time traveling machine...
It can bring you down memory lane of your journey through relationships as described by Maureen Turner in her relationship soundtrack blog or it can bring you back in time to random events in your life.
My friend Michelle Shipley sent me an email a while back describing three songs that did just that for her...
"Anything by Guns & Roses makes me think of smoking cigarettes in Krista Mcdonald's car between classes.
The Bangles 'Manic Monday' makes me think of my friends little sister,10 years our junior, singing along in her car seat.
Eiffel 65's Blue (Ba da Bee)...I think of meeting my husband Steve."
It's a fun exercise. Just pick a list of random songs and see where your mind takes you and what memories come up.
Here's my trip down musical memory lane...I really had to limit the songs...or this could easily become a 16 part blog!
AC/DC 'Thunderstruck': Dances at my high school, St. Pius X....more specifically of the guy who scared the crap out of me...Pat Major. Every time that song was played, he went mental on the dance floor.
Tea Party 'Temptation': An intense relationship. More bad than good. He broke my heart into a kazillion pieces.
Oasis 'Wonderwall': The Radio Broadcasting program at Algonquin College....I played that song a lot. And I've been hooked on the Brit music scene ever since.
Chris Cornell 'Sunshower': A song that I was listening to when my boyfriend [now husband] broke up with me for like the tenth time. We were all about the drama.
Our Lady Peace 'Naveed': The summer of 1995 and my very first boyfriend Adam Armstrong. That was truly a great summer. Carefree, exciting and fun. Exactly what a summer in your 20s is supposed to be like.
U2 'Where The Streets Have No Name': The very first cassette tape that I bought with my own money. I wore that cassette out so much I had to go buy a second one the following year.
Milli Vanilli 'Blame It On The Rain': The first time I was ever on the radio...I did a concert review with Robert W. Knight on Energy 1200. For the record I hated the concert.
TLC 'Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg': High School. My best friend Avideh. And our school exchange with an all boys school in NYC. Oh those NYC boys and their drama!
Frank Sinatra 'The Way You Look Tonight": My wedding song. It was a perfect moment.
Janet Jackson 'Rhythm Nation': Outdoor concert at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. Went with my cousin Ce-Ce and my sister. I'll never forget the guy beside us who sang every single song like he was performing on stage...he was just as interesting as watching Janet.
Grease Megamix: My best friend Stephanie...memories of getting our first tattoo and eating strawberry rhubarb pies.
Third Eye Blind 'Semi Charmed Life': Reminds me of my first radio morning gig...and knowing how much I really loved radio.
Hanson 'Mmmbopp': I was an intern at a record company and I was in the boardroom when they showed the music video to the staff for the first time. The sense of excitement and adrenaline that was running through me...and knowing that music was going to be my career in some way.
Goo Goo Dolls 'Iris': Seeing the Goo Goo Dolls at a private win-to-get in concert with my best friend Lisa at Barrymore's Music Hall in Ottawa. That concert was the first time I ever picked up a guy and asked for his number. And he looked like a total bad ass...piercings, tattoes and drove a motorcycle. He was one of the bouncers at the club. [and for the record he wasn't so badass...he was actually very, very smart...never judge a book blah, blah, blah]
Def Leppard 'Pour Some Sugar On Me': Going to my first rock concert with my cousin's wife Linda and smelling pot for the first time.
Al Bano & Romina Power 'Felicita': The massive family trip [with all my aunts, uncles and cousins] we all took to Italy for my grandparents 50th Anniversary.
Madonna 'Like A Virgin': How I never missed an episode of "Good Rockin' Tonite" with Stu Jeffries...and how I couldn't get enough of the Madonna videos.
Corey Hart ' Never Surrender': Spending hours upon hours making scrapbook after scrapbook dedicated to this Montreal boy. He was supposed to marry me for the record.
Spin Doctors 'Two Princes': Getting stranded at a rest stop while on a road trip to Boston with my cousin. (I broke the key in the car door lock. And why did we stop in the first place? I needed to shave my legs.)
Pearl Jam 'Alive': My friend Terri-Lynn made a copy of the 'Ten' album in my last year of high school. I was a total Top 40/R&B girl up until that point...that album changed me completely.
Smashing Pumpkins 'Disarm': Carleton University with my best friend Jadranka and spending obscene amounts of time and money at Rooster's Coffee House drinking coffee, playing music on the jukebox and watching Beverly Hills 90210 on the big screen TV.
No Doubt 'Just A Girl': That song made me find inner strength and it changed me...I was unstoppable. It was the first time in my life that I truly feel empowered.
Sam Roberts 'Brother Down': Sitting in my office late one afternoon with the evening DJ at Xfm [Tom Shock] and discovering this song and this Canadian artist for the very first time. We were the first radio station in Canada to officially add him [even before he had a record contract]. It was one of my proudest moments as Music Director.
Soul II Soul 'Back To Life': Driving around Montreal with a bunch of friends, totally lost, on our way to a concert.
Live 'Lightening Crashes': The song that was playing when I lost the big 'V'. I actually told the band that piece of info years later when I met them at a radio event....their response? 'You made the song worth writing by telling us that'. Yeah I got major bonus points with lead singer Ed Kowalczyk that day.

I'm sure sex wouldn't be so rewarding as this World Cup. It's not that sex isn't good but the World Cup is every four years and sex is not.
~Ronaldo
I know it's something like 89 days away, but I for one CANNOT wait for the 2010 FIFA World Cup taking place in South Africa.
Hot men playing soccer...what?
Of course soccer it's all about the art, elite athleticism and beauty of the sport.
Umm, no...no it's not.
The following video explains why I love soccer so...and why I am all about the team Italia love.
The fact that they can play soccer well is just an added bonus really.
But I digress.
Truth be told that wasn't the musical tie-in to this blog....it's actually about the official anthem for this year's FIFA World Cup.
It's a ridiculously catchy, inspiring and uplifting song. You just know this track is going to be huge. The song is by Somali-Canadian rapper and musician, K'naan.
K'naan - Wavin' Flag....
Forza Azzurri!

Consuelo Bernardi is a 30-something mummy of two. She can't play an instrument or sing a tune in key but is still obsessed with music. After 10 years in the radio business (token female traffic chick at 106.9 The Bear, morning show co-host of Doc & Connie, promo coordinator, promo-director and music director for 101.1 Xfm, Music Director and Artist Relations 105.3 KISS FM) There's more...we just can’t fit it all in without starting another page.
Still she always found the time to listen to music and make it a huge part of her life. She has more CDs than she cares to count and her monthly downloading bill for her iPod? Don’t even go there. Music truly is food for her soul. Plus secretly she’s always wanted to be a wannabe rock star...a girl can dream.
So take a minute from your day and crank up the volume. Motherhood isn't always pretty but at least your music will be hot.
