A Creative Valentine’s Treat for Kids & Moms

'Bake a Heart' Chocolate Cakes Baking Kit

This weekend, I managed to put aside an hour from our busy family schedule to get down and dirty in the kitchen with my two girls, ages 9 and 6. I was given a sample of the ‘Bake a Heart Chocolate Cakes Kit’ by the distributor, Me Myself & Us, to try at home.

This Valentine-themed kit includes almost all of the necessities to make delicious, adorable heart-shaped cakes that also happen to be nut-free.  The only things we needed to find in our kitchen were eggs, oil, water, and the oven.  As a working mom of two kids, with a husband and a dog, baking from scratch is not one of my top priorities.  Therefore, when I do find the time and interest to bake something, I am more often than not missing an ingredient, or something has gone well passed its best before date.  That's why these baking kits are so good.

The 'Bake a Heart Cakes Kit' is just one in a line of well-thought out, well-priced baking kits for boys, girls, and their busy parents.  The choices are varied, from cookies to cakes and from princesses to pirates. The boxes range in price from $10 to $20, and come with everything you need to feel like you've done something good and special with your kids. For instance, the Bake a Heart Cakes Kit includes two heart shaped baking pans, chocolate cake mix, vanilla frosting, sprinkle mix, and two icing pens.

All you need to provide is a little bit of attention and guidance.  The kids basically do the rest. I just had to help with the oven and the eating.  Within an hour, they had mixed, baked, decorated, eaten, and cleaned up. Actually, there was not very much clean up at all, especially since we finished every last morsel of the cakes!

After we finished eating and cleaning, I surveyed my girls on the pros and cons of the baking kit.  They both agreed that their favourite parts were planning and decorating the finished product.  They (and I) thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and had no negative comments.

It was fun, easy and the cakes were surprisingly tasty.  My favourite part was watching the girls work together as a team (not a common occurrence), sharing decorating ideas, taking turns mixing and pouring.  I could see they felt a great sense of accomplishment, and I did, too.

All in all, I would highly recommend the ‘Bake a Heart Chocolate Cake’ kit, along with the rest of the baking kits in the line, for birthday gifts, play date activities, and as a great way to spend quality time in the kitchen with your kids.
