Jack Layton Loses Battle to Cancer

NDP Leader Inspired by Canada's Young People

Described as the Moses of Canadian politics, NDP leader Jack Layton "led his people out of the wilderness, only to die within sight of his own Promised Land".

After eight years in power, Layton's battle with cancer ultimately forced him step down from power. He passed away yesterday at age 61, prompting his family to release an open letter to Canadians. In it, he expressed a great deal of hope in the nation's young people, who, he claimed, have been a great source of inspiration to him:

"I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party" he wrote.

"There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future."

Jack Layton, you have been an inspiration to so many. That young people in this country are becoming more involved in its politics is surely a testament to your influence and legacy. May you rest in peace.
