Greeks are up in arms about a government decision to include expand its list of state-recognized disabilities, which would see pedophiles granted higher disability pay than those with organ transplants.

The expanded list now includes pyromaniacs, compulsive gamblers, fetishists and sadomasochists – all of whom are eligible for financial assistance.

Blind NCDP leader Yiannis Vardakastanis worries the new inclusions could create extra challenges for bona fide disabled Greeks who are already facing benefit cuts due to the country's continued financial crisis and austerity measures.

"What's happened is incomprehensible. I think there is some big mistake. The ministry should have a different policy on disability," said Vardakastanis. "The list contains major changes to disability quotients, which could effectively remove many people from access to benefits."

While a heart transplant recipient would receive, say, 80 percent disability pay, pyromaniacs and pedophiles would receive 35.

Vardakastanis rightly thinks it's crackpot to compare Peeping Toms with diabetics "who have insulin shots four or five times a day."

Should pedophiles, pyromaniacs and the like receive compensation for their conditions or be left to fend for themselves?
