Melt Away Stress (And Get Your Bliss On)

How do you relax?

relax

Whether it's playing chauffeur, ferrying your child to after-school activities or special therapies, dealing with the umpteenth meltdown of the day, or just figuring out what the hell you're going to throw together for dinner that's vaguely nutritious, being a parent is freaking stressful. Doubly so if happen to parent a child with special needs.

The fact of the matter is, stress kills. Not only does it contribute to a whole host of health problems—from heart attacks, to high blood pressure and diabetes—it can also mess around with our emotional barometer, leading to anxiety and depression. And if you happen to be pregnant, even more reason to chill out.

Our lives are fast, getting faster, and we can't beg, borrow or steal an extra hour anywhere. And yet I would argue that how we handle stress directly affects how we parent. If you're feeling overly taxed, time to make some changes.

Finding your bliss is really, really important.

So how do you go about getting your bliss on? Well, you can fantasize all you want about running away to the Maldives. But the reality is, you have to squeeze in time to relax wherever and whenever you can.

For me, that means booking a massage every two months, if only to guarantee an uninterrupted 45 minutes of clear headspace. It also means broaching a deal with my other half so that I get one weekend morning to sleep in, while he gets the other. (A decent night's sleep goes a long way in combating stress.)

Yoga's not my bag, but Zumba is, so I try to boogie away my troubles when I can. If all else fails, ten minutes with a good book is enough to transport me into an altogether different reality (which tends to make my problems seem puny in comparison).

Looking for inspiration? Look no further. Here is what some tweeps do with their precious downtime:

  • napping with my cat
  • listening to music
  • social media stalking
  • chatting online with friends
  • romantic comedies
  • wine
  • running
  • surfing eBay
  • painting
  • songwriting and poetry
  • reading magazines
  • crafts/embroider
  • sex!

What works for you? How do you find your Bliss? Spill it.
