Talking About Race and Racism With Young Kids Doesn't Need to Be Difficult

It’s time to talk to our children and help them understand that race exists but different does not have to mean the other.

Talking to kids about race and racism

Talking about race can feel uncomfortable.

Talking about race with young children can feel next to impossible.

The Day My Daughter was Mean-Girled

The hurt in her voice was heartbreaking

My heart hurts today.

It was nothing more than a childish insult but brings with it a realization that the world isn’t always so easy.

My husband and I were ordering food at the counter of a busy restaurant. My two daughters were waiting at the table, enjoying the crayons and colouring books we had brought along.

I was just about to head to the table when my oldest daughter came running up to me. “Mommy, those girls said I had poo skin.” She pointed to a group of girls seated a few feet away with their parents.

And I saw it.

The Subtle New Face Of Racism

There is an article floating around. You might have heard of it. It tells the tale of a white man who created the character of a powerful black woman for an upcoming TV show, How To Get Away With Murder. Except that’s not what the article really says at all.

The article actually tells the tale of racism and idiocy and how the two go hand in hand.

A Response To Donald Sterling: It's Time For A Change

My response is simple: We’re not finished talking to you yet. We’re just getting started

donald sterling

It seems that Donald Sterling thinks that his girlfriend looks bad posing with black people.

Actually, Donald, what really makes her look bad is sleeping with you.

Or, I mean, business associating with you (wink, wink).

America The Beautiful—Can You Believe This Reaction?

This Beautiful Super Bowl commerical sure brought out the ugly

Coca-Cola aired a commercial during this week’s Super Bowl.

It showed typical Americans doing typical American things all while singing ‘America The Beautiful.’

It was a smart and touching ad that should have had people talking about what a great country the lovely United States of America is.

It should have made its citizens proud.

Except that’s not all that happened.

A Lesson That's Hard To Forget

Some Memories Last A Lifetime Even When You Wish They Wouldn't

children playing in sprinkler

Thirty years ago, I was just a young child playing on our front lawn. It was a warm summer day and the sprinkler was on. My sister and I were running back and forth in the water, having fun splashing around.

Some men happened to pull up to the stop sign beside our corner house. They rolled down their windows and gave me my first taste of what some of the world thought of me.

“Paki.”

“Go home.”

“Get out of our country.”

I was four years old.

I'm Just Like You, Only Different

Look Closer And You'll See That I Might Not Be So Different After All

I am a born and raised Canadian.

But when people look at me, the last place they think of is Canada.

Whether I’m travelling across the country, shopping across the border, or even just going for a walk in my own neighbourhood, I’m inevitably asked the question.

“Where are you from?”

The same country as you if you really must know.

But I know what they mean.

I want to tell them that I’m just like you, only different.
