5 Simple, Pretty Back-To-Basics Braid Ideas

We’re back to the grind now that school is back in session. Now that the shininess and newness of the school year is starting to lose its sheen, it’s time to get real and deal with the facts.

Fact: I have a school-aged child. With hair. Hair that is prone to get tangles and get in her face, her food, her mouth and just get in her way.

Fact: Getting out of the house on time in the mornings is a nightmare.

Fact: My child starts to look like a street wanderer within an hour of leaving for school. By the time 3:00 pm rolls around, she more resembles "Cousin It" than the sweet girl who left me just this morning.

Fact: I’m a parent, not the celebrity hairstylist on call for the Kardashians.

Those are a lot of cold, hard facts but rest assured, I have a solution. Just one solution that will help solve all those problems:

Quick and pretty braids, thanks to Goody hair accessories!

Seriously, back to school is made a lot easier with back-to-basics braids. A girl with braids never looks unkempt, never gets food in her hair, and never has to worry about tangles.

Not to mention that they take less than five minutes to complete and that means you might actually get out the door on time, all while looking fabulously stylish. Score.

So, without further adieu, let me (re)introduce you to five back-to-basics braids that will make rushed school mornings that much easier:

1. The French Braid

  1. Brush hair thoroughly with a TangleFix Brush (the perfect brush to get rid of all tangles and knots!) and separate a good size section of hair in the very middle top part of the head, before the crown.
  2. Divide this section of hair into three separate sections.
  3. Take the left section and place it over the middle section.
  4. Take the right section and place it over the middle section.
  5. Add some hair from the side to the left section and place it all over the middle section as before.
  6. Add some hair from the side to the right section and place it all over the middle section as before.
  7. Repeats step 5 and step 6 until you run out of hair and tie the bottom of the braid with a Goody Ouchless Elastic.

And there you go. So pretty, so clean, so French.

2. The Ponytail Braid

  1. Brush hair thoroughly to get rid of all tangles and knots and pull all the hair up into a high ponytail and tie with a Goody No Metal Ouchless Elastic
  2. Divide the hair into three separate sections.
  3. Take the left section and place it under the middle section.
  4. Take the right section and place it under the middle section.
  5. Repeat step 4 and step 5 until you run out of hair and tie the bottom of the braid with another elastic.

And ta-da! A simple and easy braid that takes less than 3 minutes to complete. It also happens to be a favorite of the Kardashian sisters, not that I would know about that sort of celebrity gossip...

Tip: I suggest you place the hair under the middle section rather than over the middle section as this makes the braid look nicer. You can also wrap the braid up into a braided bun and secure with Goody Bobby Pins for an extra special look!

3. The Fish Tail Braid

  1. Brush hair thoroughly to get rid of all tangles and knots and separate a good section of hair from the very front of the head, before the crown.
  2. Pull that section of hair into a ponytail and tie with a Goody No Metal Ouchless Elastic.
  3. Now take all the hair, including the bottom half that isn’t in the ponytail, and separate it into two equal sections.
  4. Take a small outer section from the left side and cross it over to the right side.
  5. Take a small outer section from the right side and cross it over to the left side.
  6. Repeat step five and step six until you run out of hair and tie the bottom of the braid with an elastic.
  7. Adorn the top of the braid with a Goody FashionNow Salon Clip.

And it’s done! An attractive and cute alternative to the plain braid that looks much more intricate than it really is!

Tip: The smaller the pieces of hair you use, the tidier and tighter the braid will look. You can always secure stray hairs with the Goody Bobby Pins or Goody Snap Clips. This braid also looks just as great as a side braid or a ponytail braid.

4. The Fancied-Up Jasmine Braid

  1. Brush hair thoroughly to get rid of all tangles and knots and pull all the hair up into a very high ponytail and tie with a Goody Ouchless Elastic.
  2. Tie an elastic about two inches down the braid.
  3. Separate the hair between the two elastics into two even sections.
  4. Take the bottom of the braid and flip it through the opening of the two sections.
  5. Repeat step 3 to step 5 until you run out of hair and tie the bottom of the braid with an elastic.

Every girl wants to be a Disney princess at one point or another and this is the perfect hair for those girls. A trendy braid in a matter of minutes!

5. The Braided Headband

  1. Brush hair thoroughly to get rid of all tangles and knots and separate a good size section of hair from behind the right ear, close to where a headband would naturally sit.
  2. Tie the rest of the hair up into a ponytail so that it is out of your way.
  3. Braid the small section of hair into a tight three strand braid.
  4. Tie the bottom of the braid with an elastic.
  5. Undo your ponytail.
  6. Separate a good size section of hair from behind the left ear, close to where a headband would naturally sit and tie the rest of the hair up into a ponytail.
  7. Braid the small section of hair into a tight three strand braid.
  8. Tie the bottom of the braid with an elastic.
  9. Take the left braid and bring it over the top of the head, just where a headband would sit and fasten it on the other side with Goody bobby pins.
  10. Take the right braid and bring it over the top of the head behind the other braid and fasten it on the other side with Goody bobby pins. You can either leave the rest of the hair in a high ponytail or take it down.

Voila! A braided headband that looks impressive and is quick to do. Win and win.

Fact: Braids are so stylish and fashionable right now that your daughter might not even realize that it’s really just another ploy to keep her hair out of her face and get her to school on time.

Happy braiding!
