Gav Martell: He’s in the Kitchen

Grilled Thanksgiving Dinner

Let me start by proudly telling all the nay-sayers: you CAN grill an entire Thanksgiving dinner on the BBQ. I've got a lot of friends south of the border who combine two great U.S. traditions — Thanksgiving and football. For a lot of people this means kicking back in their armchair and putting on the television to watch a full day of NFL games, while taking a break just long enough to gobble down some turkey with all the fixings. However, in Detroit and Dallas they have hosted the Thanksgiving Classics since the league's inception in 1920.

Eat, Relax, Play: A Trip to Adler Thermae Spa, Italy

A Foodie Paradise in the Tuscan Countryside

You don’t need to see the culinary road-tripping movie The Trip To Italy to know that Italy immediately brings two important things to travelers' minds: first, of course, is the stunning landscape, from the pastel-colored sea-side towns to the lush countryside to the majestic ancient ruins; and second, the extraordinary flavors, from the fine wines to the multi-course meals made from fresh, local ingredients, like tomatoes, olive oil, and fresh cheeses.

How this Foodie Dad Made it to MasterChef Canada Season 2

One dad's journey in the quest for a white apron....

My life has been a series of coincidences which defy logic. So to me it really comes as no surprise that I landed one of the coveted spots as a finalist on season 2 of MasterChef Canada.

Case in point:

  • I wasn't supposed to go to sleepover camp in Wisconsin but followed a friend there after 10th grade when all other plans fell through... and ended up meeting the girl I would one day marry.
  • I wasn't supposed to get into my Comp Sci program at university.

Dump 'n Bake: No-Headache No-Boil Homemade Mac 'n Cheese

The simple non-boil, roux-free baked mac 'n cheese that doesn't compromise on taste

No Boil Macaroni and Cheese

We're currently trying to sell our house. Nothing exciting there, but it means my ability to mess up the kitchen is severely limited. Couple that with the fact that my family still needs to eat dinner every night and you'll see I've got myself quite the conundrum. I need solutions for delicious dinners that don't make a big mess and minimize the amount of dirty dishes they generate.

Slow Cooker White Kidney Bean and Barley Soup Recipe

A taste of Italian home-style cooking- from your Crock Pot

slow cooker soup
Culinary travel has many wonderful benefits. You get to experience a place through its delicious food and drink, while the essence of its past, present, and future unfolds on your palate. There's no better way to learn about a people's history and culture than through the food that defines them.

This is surely as true in Italy as anywhere else in the world. There are no meal times in Italy. Restaurants are full from dawn until well after dusk. Meals are not confined to North America's three square meals a day. Between breakfast and lunch?

Small but Mighty: Lunchbox Broccoli Mini Quiche

Scrambling for nut-free school lunch ideas? Try these super easy mini quiches!

It's getting harder and harder to come up with inventive lunches the kids are willing to take on a regular basis. It seems since peanut butter fell off of the school lunch menu there are few options that my kids don't start to get sick of after a few days in a row. That means I've got to keep changing up the sandwiches I give them, or get inventive in the kitchen.

Bake with Beer: Guinness Cake Recipe

Secret Ingredient: Holiday Peace

Guinness cake

Having a lot of family together in one place over the holidays can lead to a lot of strife. Sally doesn't want to sleep in the same room as her boy cousins. Little Bobby will only sit next to his brother at meals. No one likes Aunt Julie's green bean casserole. And Uncle Ned keeps muttering to himself in the corner about how his gifts are never appreciated.

Breakfast For Dinner With A Mexican Twist: Huevos del Norte

Comforting and delicious, sweet and tangy, salty and savoury.

Huevos del Norte

I'm not sure how a Jewish girl from the Midwest US falls in love with Mexican food - but so it goes. My wife has always had an affinity for it. Tacos, quesadillas, taquitos, tortilla soup, burritos, tamales, chille rellenos, pambazos. Sign her up.

Marrying a girl from Wisconsin has many immediate benefits. You automatically get to become a legitimate fan of the winning-est franchise in NFL history; you don't need an excuse to drink beer before noon; and you don't need to apologize to anyone for your insatiable love of cheese. Sure I could tell you all of the other reasons I married a girl from Wisconsin, but I'd rather win the day on beer and cheese alone. Crack open a bottle of your favourite brew and get a load of the cheesy goodness of this recipe for homemade Parmesan Gnocchi. It's not difficult at all.

Simple and Quick Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Fall Memories, Pumpkin Dreams

"'I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers." A marvelous quote my wife recently blurted out in a car ride through the fall country side. I'll ignore the fact that it came from Anne of Green Gables. Growing up in a home with three sisters I've spent a lifetime avoiding Anne of Green Gables, Sarah of Avonlea, Laura of Walnut Grove and Margaret of New York and later New Jersey. In fact, I've somewhat mastered the art of avoidance having grown up without ever seeing Grease, Sound of Music, or Dirty Dancing... but I digress..

Beer-Basted Beef Shanks and Argentinian Corn Pudding Recipe

A stick-to-your-ribs family dinner your kids will love!

One of the best cookbooks I came across this year was Seven Fires: Grilling the Argentine Way. While it's filled with some awesome and delicious recipes for grilled meats, it was this corn pudding recipe that's really won me over. It's like nothing you've tried before. Warm, comforting, full of fresh flavours and simple.

Taking In A Baseball Game? Here's Where You Should Eat!

A look at some of the best places for Canadians to eat "just outside" some of America's ballparks

Long before the Blue Jays ever played their first snowy game in April 1973, Canadians have been dipping south of the border for baseball road trips. While the game has always been cradled as America's past-time, the tradition of travelling from city to city to take in a game at multiple stadiums has practically become a Canadian rite of passage.

Just How Safe Are Canada's Food Allergen Warnings?

A look at the effectiveness of food allergy labels

For approximately 7% of Canadians, food allergies are no laughing matter. Those with food allergies have immune systems that mistakenly react to proteins in certain foods. Reactions can range from minor skin irritations, to gastro-intestinal issues,  respiratory or cardiovascular problems, and even death. Health Canada has implemented strict rules when it comes to labelling packaged foods with allergen warnings.

You Can Make The Original 1964 Buffalo Wings Recipe

Celebrate The 50th Anniversary Of The Buffalo Wing!

Canadians have always had a soft spot for Buffalo, NY. If cities could be adopted, Canada would have made Buffalo a member of the family long ago. We love to shop and watch football games there, and occasionally poke fun at the number of snow storms they get hit with. Another favourite is the famed Buffalo chicken wing! This year, celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Buffalo Wingit’s a saucy one.
