While often overlooked due to its shiny nearby neighbour Park City, Ogden Utah is a hidden gem tucked in just north of Salt Lake City. It is a ski destination that manages to combine good skiing and great food, while remaining at an affordable price point. Over the last few decades North American skiing has become an expensive past-time. In an effort to woo tourists, ski resorts across North America have been building bigger and more impressive resorts.
Cooking for kids is not always easy. One likes pasta with sauce, one likes pasta with cheese. One likes meat sauce with spaghetti, one likes meat sauce with elbow macaroni. It's like I can never win. In our house it's always a battle when I decide to make coleslaw. One loves creamy, the other loves vinegar. I've been toying with a perfect compromise and think I've come across a dressing everyone can be happy with — honey mustard! Give it a try.
I wasn't always a superhero. Breakfasts used to consist of whatever I could grab and stuff in my gob before running out the door on my way to work in the morning. However, after a visit to Ireland last year, eating good-for-you food and having some wonderful conversations with people about how important good food is for you mind, body and spirit. I decided I had finally had enough of eating foods that weren't fit for human consumption.
Making perfect roast beef at home should not be intimidating or difficult. With a few simple steps and some essential tools you can make sure that any roast you make, from an expensive standing rib roast to a lower end chuck roast, will turn out perfect every time.
These spiked cookies are an excellent way to indulge over the holidays! With extra time at home I'm busy experimenting in the kitchen and whipped up a batch of some custom crafted booze-enhanced cookies. People love trying different flavour combinations. I tried vanilla cookies with Kahlua cream centres and chocolate cookies with Creme de Cacao cream. Mix and match your favourite cookies and schnapps to see what your favourite is!
Santa will definitely be taking some of these home for Mrs. Claus.
Special moments in time. But truth be told, special doesn’t even do these justice. They are moments when you sit back and realize that you are IN IT, a place where you are in perfect sync with the universe, simply because you are sitting, standing, lying right there at this exact place and time. You can call it a Zen moment, the stars aligning, or any other term to describe your soul being fulfilled at its current state.
For me, it was the first time I stepped out on the ice with a hockey stick in my hand.
Be careful how you word it when you ask your friends if they'd like to check out your gnudis (with a silent 'g' it's pronounced "nudey.") However, they'll all fall in love with this ricotta-based football-shaped pasta that's as fluffy as clouds. Gnudi is similar to gnocchi — it's a soft, thick pasta made with flour and egg but is lighter because it's main ingredient is ricotta cheese. The consistency can almost be compared to a matzoh ball — but oh-so-much-more delicious!
Hanukkah is right around the corner, and I have been cooking up lots of traditional holiday dishes. I thought, though, that I’d opt for a twist on the traditional latke. These hybrid sweet potato latkes topped with some super charged sour cream make for a great combo.
Sons of Anarchy is a TV show that has clearly hit its stride. The FX show follows a fictional motorcycle club in California's Central Valley. As my wife likes to say "You don't need to be a fan of motorcycles to be a fan of Sons." The Sons, or SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Originals) as they're named, have picked up a huge following and average a 2.5 rating on Tuesday night TV in the US (about 4.5 million homes).
We all know how healthy carrots are, but we throw away some of the most nutritious parts every time we peel a carrot and throw away the tops. Many of the beneficial nutrients in a carrot are contained in the carrot's peel. By removing the peel of a carrot, you are removing much of the nutrients naturally present in the vegetable. Also, did you know that carrot tops are just as healthy as the root? They are highly nutritive, rich in protein, minerals and vitamins. They contain six times the vitamin C of the root and are a great source of potassium and calcium!
I look for food inspiration everywhere and anywhere but one of the things I've learned is that it's crucial to buy produce that is in season. Feeding my family fruits and vegetables that have been grown to handle a 2-week trip across the continent on the back of a truck just so they can eat strawberries in February is NOT the right decision.
This Halloween terrify your whole family with this Franken-Turkey. It gets served looking like a bird with 8 wings!
You simply insert chicken wings into incisions in a turkey breast before you roast it. As the fat and skin render and roast the whole thing fuses together so that your dish looks like some creature from a sci-fi film. An easy trick that will have them squealing with delight when you bring it to the table this Halloween.
This Halloween treat is ghoulishly delightful. Your kids will take exceptional delight gobbling down these tasy fingers. While they are horrifying to look at, they are a pretty healthy choice compared to some of the candy and chocolate that will be vying for your kids' attention this Halloween! Try these fingers out on your crew. They're easy to make and frighteningly delicious!
You'll have everyone thinking twice before dipping into this Halloween spook-tacular guacamole dish. Orange peppers carved like jack-o-lanters appear to be tossing their last meal across the tray in a scene reminiscent of The Exorcist. An excellent appetizer or snack to put out when your guests arrive for a Halloween meal or party.
Hummus is one of those foods that can really land on a really wide spectrum when it comes to texture and taste. The texture can go from lumpy and gritty to airy and fluffy. The flavour can be light and lemony, or heavy and garlicky. Personally, there is nothing quite like a simple homemade hummus. Nothing fancy — just the essentials. Processed until almost at a whipped consistency with lemon juice and extra-virgin olive oil it really is a thing of beauty. A food that dates back hundreds of years and is a winner in our house today.
Since midway through this summer our family has been all about using real foods in our recipes and avoiding a lot of the additives and preservatives in packaged foods. It's also cut out a lot of the excess sodium and sugar (read: corn syrup) in our diets. While we would have once used sauce from a jar, this chicken recipe is fully flavoured from ingredients that are fresh and delicious. It got adapted from using white sugar to a bit of maple syrup but otherwise it's still true to form.
Look, I'm all for cooking for the kids and getting dinner to the table as quickly and as easily as possible. But sometimes, say every 3 years, I get the urge. The urge to labour over a dish and spend a large portion of my day nurturing and caring for it. To have my food be a labour of love. There is no better tasting dish than one you worked for so long. The brisket you smoked for 8 hours. The homemade ketchup you spent a weekend making. The chicken bouillabaisse that took an eternity.
Cooking for my kids is one of my favourite things to do. They are the perfect panel of taste testers. Varying degrees of pickiness, different like and dislikes with a sprinkling of brutal honesty. I know they're going to let me know right away whether they like a dish or not.
