My Mother's Day 2013 Time Capsule ...

A Peek into our Family's Emails

I've written this blog post to put into my memory box. I know that when I'm 90 and sitting in my rocking chair I'm going to love reading it...

In the week leading up to Mothers Day 2013, my daughter Erica was attending back-to-back meetings. I was getting ready to go on assignment in Russia and her sister, Leslie was giving workshops in San Francisco. We had little time to chat so we planned Mother's Day via email. Here's a peek into our preparations.

Son-in-law Terry to all:
Mother's Day is coming up. Who's house? A restaurant? How do we all wish to praise our wives and mothers on this 'holy' day?

Erica to me:
I'm running the SportingLife 10K on Mother]s Day. I can only be there 11:30AM

Me to all:
How about everybody coming here for about 11:30 for brunch on Sunday. I spoke to Erica and she's OK with it.

Leslie to me:
I'm in if we can all bring something to contribute. Any chance we can do it earlier? Russ made plans to go out. Can we make it 10:30?

Me to Leslie:
Erica is running the 10K. Figure it out between you and come up with a time.

Me to all:
Does 11:30 mean brunch? I guess we're really talking about lunch. How about me picking up deli and building around that? Comments, suggestions?

Leslie to all:
Sounds good. How about deli meats, make your own sandwiches? We can bring yummy chopped liver and coleslaw. And we can have other cool salads. Mommy — make your delish egg salad. What do u think?

Me to all:
Yes, that's what I was thinking. I'll buy the meats and bread. Make a fruit salad and an egg salad.
Comments...

Erica to all:
I'll make a big avocado mango salad.

Leslie to all:
I've got chopped liver, pickles, chips, and coleslaw.

Erica to me:
I just ordered a birthday cake for Leslie. Shhhhh ...

Me to Erica:
Woo Hoo! Perfection! Bringing candles, too?

Me to son-in-law Russ:
I need one folding chair.

Russ to me:
Got it. One folding chair.

Me to all:
Cool! I think we're covered. Of course I also have my new bottle of Scotch and a bottle of white.
Russ, don't forget the chair, please.

Mother's Day arrives:
11:30 AM comes and goes. Leslie calls to say they were running late. Erica calls to say she's home after finishing the race. She's running late. Everyone arrives around noon laden with goodies and presents.

Russ forgets the chair he promises to bring and his punishment is to sit on the chair from my office.

We eat. We drink. We talk. We take photos. Lotus creates glasses out of her salami slices. Josh makes faces for each of the photos. Jessie does her best to sneak into all the pictures and little Bexie just wants to cuddle with everybody.

We surprise Leslie with her birthday cake. She is very happy!

And I am left with certificates created by my grandkiddies that attest to the fact that they love me.

Life is good.
