I run a small business. I started it six years ago without realizing it would become a going concern. It crept up on me, like the tide. What was a hobby and a desire to connect with like-minded moms has become a business with salaries, meetings, and deadlines.
You have no idea how shocking it is to wake my son up in the morning and see a beautiful young giant roll out of bed. My baby boy is almost a man. What's even more disturbing is that my son is having a Bar Mitzvah this year and I have no idea what kind of party to throw. Yes, it's all about priorities.
It's less than three months until Target officially opens their doors to Canadians. Are you excited?
No more cross-border shopping expeditions necessary. Soon, most of the designer labels you're used to snapping up at Target will be available in Canada.
*Disclaimer: This review is entirely biased. Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie. When I was eleven, I actually hand wrote the entire movie script. I wanted to BE Dorothy.
Last night, my kids and I were treated to the Toronto production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Wizard of Oz. Starring new talent Danielle Wade as Dorothy Gale, this version dares to tamper with the classic screenplay with new direction, songs and script.
I cannot tell you how much it irks me when my daughter makes this excuse not to go to bed. It's not the bedtime ritual that bothers me. Rather, it's that sense of entitlement that she deserves to have dessert; that it's her "right" as a my daughter to be given sweets after dinner.
I am so incredibly proud that YummyMummyClub.ca won the award for Best in Digital Lifestyle Entertainment at the Digi Awards last night.
To be honest, I dreamed of a day when they would call out YMC's name and that sparkling statue would have our name on it, just like in the Academy Awards.
I'd rush up on stage, deliver my heart-wrenching, powerful thank you speech, and walk off on cloud nine.
My twelve-year-old son announced he wanted to get his hair cut...very short. Apparently his school buddies convinced him it's time to clean up his act. I was shocked, seeing as he loved his rock 'n roll longish hair. And so did I (she says while clinging on to the last vestiges of her former rock 'n roll years). I subtly suggested that his head would get cold; that winter isn't the best time to shear one's locks. He disagreed.
Tonight I’m sitting at the table with my kids watching them do their school work, my husband and I both close by working on our laptops. We’re together as a family, in a warm house, our stomachs are full.
When I found out YMC was a finalist in two categories at the prestigious Canadian Online Publishers Awards, I almost fainted with pride. YMC was chosen as one of four finalists in the Best Overall Online-only Publication. We also made the final cut in the category for Best Blog. Woot!
There is an uncomfortable dance going on between bloggers, brands, and PR companies. I see the myriad ways brands are trying to connect with bloggers, often unsuccessfully, in the hopes said blogger will promote company's product or service, preferably for free. Conversely, people who post are hoping to make a few bucks leveraging their "influence" on behalf of brands.
Did you know that I actually haven't met all the YMC bloggers in person yet? To entice everyone across the country who works with YMC to come to Toronto I offered to buy everyone a ticket to Blissdom. I know, I'm evil like that.
But what about you, the YMC Reader? Clearly YMC wouldn't exist if not for you coming to the site to read, to write articles, to leave comments, to enter contests. So I think it's only fair for you to get a free ticket to Blissdom too.
On Sunday, I celebrated my birthday by helping to raise $7,800 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. Fifty five moms and dads joined #TeamYMC in Toronto, Calgary, Victoria and Abbotsford to do the run and raise some money in the process.
Halloween is my family's absolute favorite time of year. With two theatrical kids who dress up in quirky costumes on a weekly basis, Halloween is HUGE in our home.
My kids have already designed their Halloween costumes for this year. My daughter is wearing a crazy pink dress she found at a flea market this summer. My son is reprising his portrayal of The Artful Dodger for the 2nd year.
Because Halloween is so big for us, we've created some unique family traditions through the years.
My birthday is Sunday, September 30th, which coincidentally is the same day as the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. So, I've decided to make the 5km run my birthday party. And you're invited.
YMC is my baby. I launched it almost six years ago to connect with other moms so we could celebrate and commiserate the realities of modern motherhood. It's grown into a magnificent tapestry of mothers' voices. Through all the posts and articles we publish, you see life through the prism of motherhood. This site only exists because of you. If you don't read YMC, it withers and dies. And if you don't write for us, there are fewer voices and storytellers to for us to learn from.
I've decided to make my healthy a priority and start incorporating some small changes. I'm already seeing a difference.
I heard it was coming—that at a certain age you magically develop belly fat and lose mobility. I'm at that stage where I stopped buying new clothes, started spending as little time in front of the mirror and am finding it difficult to bend over without pain. My circumference is expanding. My back is locking. I need to take care of myself.
My husband and I just returned from a five-day romantic vacation in Portland, Oregon. Full Disclosure: This is the first time in twelve years my husband and I have gone away together without the kids. A couple of questions may jump to mind. For example: Why did you pick Portland as a romantic destination? And, why did it take you twelve years to get away without the kids?
