Daniel Thompson Beauty is so happy to announce two new retail partners in Canada!
And if you are in one these two cities you can meet me at the grand openings happening this month.
Drop by to say hello or book a personal appointment to meet me, have your cosmetics questions answered and of course have me create a personalized make up look just for you. These appointments are normally $250 but if you visit me during the grand opening events they are free of charge!
To all the regular readers of Beauty: BUSTED! I am sorry I have been absent for a little while. My travel schedule has been punishing. I am glad to be back, though. And with so many great new things to share with you.
This week: BB Creams.
I was asked by a reader:
“What’s the big deal about BB creams? Are they everything they are touted to be?”
Nothing is accidental in the world of cosmetics sales. From the advertising to the displays to the hype to the “studies” to gifts to the free makeovers, everything is designed to encourage consumers to shop. This, in and of itself, is not a bad thing but it is important to understand there is a real science used to encourage consumers to part with their money. If you have ever felt you are running the gauntlet to get through a department store cosmetics department then this article is for you.
This season makeup takes its rightful place in the pantheon of embellishment that defines an outfit, creates fashion and signifies style. With bold, bright and intense colours that shock and demand attention. A conundrum of texture that transfixes the gaze while enhancing the individual wearer: this is the very essence of Spring 2013
The trend is light capturing elegance that inspires admiration!
Anti wrinkle or anti-aging products are the most lucrative segment of the cosmetics industry and yet not a single over-the-counter product, making anti-aging claims, has a shred of published data or research to back up its marketing claims. Not one.
Don't be fooled by the "clinical studies" done by the brands selling these products. These "studies" are nothing more than marketing gimmicks designed to create a sense of science around the products.
There are great products for skin at every price point. I have said this for years—it is a myth that more money means better quality, and it is a myth that you cannot find great skin care at very low prices.
Your semi-annual opportunity to meet me in person is fast approaching.
Twice per year I go out on the road to meet readers and fans. I will be available to answer all your cosmetics questions and to help you find the right products for your personal style.
Of course, you can also have a personal appointment with me to have a new spring look created just for you. Usually when you book with me in studio this would cost $250. Come meet me at any of these public appearances and you can have the same professional services that are provided in my studio.
Every year I travel to Paris. I am typing this from my friend's apartment in the 18th. I travel to Paris for many reason—some personal, some business, and some for inspiration. Paris never disappoints my creative soul. There is a reason great artists and great writers flock to this city (historically and in modern times).
I flew to an extreme climate yesterday. I sometimes forget, living in Toronto, that Canada has such variety in climate zones. When I walked off the plane I was hit by -25C temperatures and such arid air that I could actually feel the moisture evaporating from my skin.
Immediately I thought: "What can be done to prevent such extreme stress on the skin?"
While most of us know to use great moisturizers, during the cold winter months, there are some great beauty tips, of which many people never think, that will save your skin and also your budget!
Here we go—just seven shopping days left until the holidays!
Every year, I am asked what people can find at the very last minute for great gifts. Everyone waits so long to shop, but still wants to have big impact with a budget! Of course, I am no different. I am always looking for a great way to impress with gifts, and respect my budget.
Here are two great ideas for unique last-minute holiday gifts that no one will expect:
There is a reigning myth that I am opposed to all higher priced cosmetics. Again and again I say this is not actually true. While I am opposed to overpaying for cosmetics, I am not opposed to paying for quality.
As a makeup artist, I have to always have the best options for my clients. Yes, it's true, I produce my own line of cosmetics, and 98% of my work is done with my collection, but I am the first to admit that there are some amazing cosmetics out there that are well worth the purchase.
Holiday 2012—here we go! This is the best time of year to buy cosmetics and fragrances. Companies pull out all the stops to create incentives and deals for cosmetics shoppers. Often consumers complain that cosmetics never go on sale (at least not the name brand, designer ones), but that is not true. It's just that the sales look different. Rather than mark products down in price the cosmetics company "value add" their offering. The literally give away products for free with purchases.
I recently spent some time on the Elizabeth Arden website, as part of my regular research on cosmetics and cosmetic company claims. EA is one of the oldest and most respected skincare companies in the world, and, yes, I worked for them in the early days of my career.
Their website is full of great information, and like all companies, they make some great products, as well as some not so great.
The party season is in full swing. Makeup becomes something of a necessary accessory this time of year! Of course, the usual e-mails I receive always ask me about the "rules" for application. My opinion is simple: there are no rules! Makeup should be fun and easy, not laborious and annoying.
Quite simply, I say throw out all the rules—do what you want.
