InStyle Magazine: Beauty Myths

Did They Get It Correct?

This month's edition of InStyle Magazine showcased a huge cover story called "Top 14 Beauty Myths Debunked."

I was very curious to see what the story included, since most of the time fashion magazines do nothing except perpetuate myths as fact.

Here are some great myths that they busted correctly:

  • InStyle:

SPF 60 is twice as effective as SPF 30. Not quite. You only get about two percent more protection from the sun when you switch from 30 to 60.

CORRECT!

SPF 60 offers protection for a longer period of time, but does not actually prevent more UV light from penetrating the skin when compared to an SPF 30.

  • InStyle:

Pluck one gray hair and two more will grow in its place. Since only one hair can grow out of any follicle, it isn’t likely that a second gray hair will duplicate in the same spot.

CORRECT!

The reason it appears that grey hair comes in thicker and faster, is because every follicle has a different growth rate and produces different hair texture.

  • InStyle:

Greasy foods cause acne. You can’t blame the grease for this one.

CORRECT!

Acne is caused by a bacterial infection, and the only way to properly treat it is to kill the p.Acne bacteria. Food does not cause acne.

  • InStyle:

Sipping a lot of water will give you dewy skin. Water won’t give you Cleopatra’s silky complexion.

CORRECT!

Deep penetrating water binding agents create hydration in the skin's tissue. Water consumption will help keep your skin clear, but will do nothing for its moisture level.
