Random Acts of Kindness

Be Kind to a Mutha

Random Acts of Kindness

Completely inspired by the Kindness Revolution (brainchild of the awesome Sharon and Candace) I want to share some tips about how to #BeKind to Muthas...which is ironic because I was just talking, with Erica last week, about how unkind people can be to expectant moms.

Erica and moi (and a bunch of other yummies) were at a Blissdom Canada last week in downtown Toronto.  The unkindness I experienced was that no one - NO ONE - gave an 8+ months pregnant lady (moi) a seat on the subway!  It would have been a simple kindness.  A small courtesy.  A human gesture.

But subway riders looked away.  Ignored.   Went on with their lives.

Be kind to a mutha.  Give her your seat on public transportation.

And when you see a Mutha struggling down subway stairs with a baby, stoller, diaper bag and more - offer to give her a hand ('cause we've only got 2 and quite often it's just not enough).

And when you are in *insert name of big box store here* and you see a child going nutty please don't comment or eye roll the parents.  #BeKind and offer an understanding smile or nod.  Everyone has a bad day.  Everyone has had (like it or not) the nutty child in the big box store.  Everyone.

I did recieve one random act of kindness this week...a cashier at the grocery store flagged me over to the 10 items or less lane (even though I had, like, 12 things in my cart).  "You shouldn't be shopping.  You should send someone else to do this for you" she advised with a smile.

I didn't feel judged.  Or belittled.  I felt a great relief that someone was helping me get out of the friggin' store a little faster (my pregnant legs thanked that cashier!).

That kindnesss made my day.  And everyone deserves a little more kindness.  Everyone.

What to do with all that the candy...

Halloween Candy how-to

What to do with all that the candy...

Halloween is come and gone.  Now what to do with all that candy?  Do you let the kids indulge?  Do you ration it?  Send it to the office?  Or sneak it after the kids go to bed?  Let's investigate the treat-a-pa-looza that is invading our households...

[Can I tell you how surprised I am - yet again - of how many peanut-y treats were in my kids loot bags this year?!  I feel for all the families challenged with nut allergies on Halloween.  I am very "give out peanut free" oriented however the 6 Reese's cups in the loot bags prove many others are not.  I digress...]

So all that candy...it would be great to take a poll...as to what we all do with it all (see above).

I do have some activity ideas that might help with dealing with it all...

a) Make Piles.  Make piles of lesser-loved loot and share with others.  Send it to the office.  Send it to book club.  Give it to a sugar-lovin' neighbour.   Send it to Grandma's house for her treat basket for when the kids visit (or for her to noch on a nibbly herself).

b) 2 and 2.  (well, insert whatever # is reasonable to you)  For example, you can have 2 treats after school and 2 treats after dinner (after you have had a fruit or yogurt).

c) Upgrade.  Give me half you treats and you can upgrade to something better than candy.  Like a movie out with Mom.  Or staying up an extra half hour on Friday night.

d) Forget about it.  Put all the loot in the treat basket and put it away in the pantry.  Dole it out little by little over time.

This post was powered by the loot basket - sshh - don't tell the kids!
