Do You Embrace Aging?

Or do you fear it?

Do You Embrace Aging?

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. ~Mark Twain

I am 42 and 3/4. No shame in admitting it. I don't try to pass myself off as 39. I haven't been carded in a very, very, very long time. And my bikini body is better suited to a one piece the last couple of years. What do you do, right? You can't stop the hands of time.

Does this mean I don't care what I look like? Hell, no. I totally care. I try to work out. I decline potato chips now way more than I did when I was 25.  I find the wrinkles daily in the mirror. I hate the reflection my car window gives back and I'm convinced florescent lighting is the devils work.  I use potions and lotions to stay "young looking." I struggle, more and more frequently, with age-appropriate wardrobe choices and I'm a little sad to let certain things go.

When it comes to aging though, I'm fighting a losing battle and I've come to grips with it.

Aging is a funny thing. Like slap your knee, ha ha kind of funny. Because if you don't find it funny, it can be downright depressing.  Like right now for example, I could be all sad and glum that gravity is pushing my breasts down to my waist or I could be happy that the desk serves as a wonderful support platform. Perspective.

There is no doubt that there are things about aging that scare the hell out of me. Those are the things I like to keep pushed down in the dark corners of my brain. I don't relish the thought of disease or being a burden or losing those I love, or leaving those I love behind. Nothing funny about those things.

Everything else is fair game though, because not to be cliche, but as long as I have my health, I have everything. Wrinkles be damned. I used to know a guy, and everyday I'd ask him how he was and he'd say "I'm on the right side of the sod, so it's a good day." That's the attitude I want to carry with me as long as I can.

How are you with aging? Do you admit your age? What scares you the most? What makes you laugh?

Summer Tease

38 More Sleeps Until Summer Break

Summer Tease

This past weekend marked perhaps the most perfect weather ever for a May long weekend in Canada. It was absolutely glorious from the Friday morning right through to the Monday night. And it took my family exactly 3.2 seconds to shift into summer mode. The girls lived in the pool, they picniced on blankets on the lawn, I generally avoided my computer for three straight days, my husband and I sat in the backyard with cold drinks and had long conversations.....it was perfection.

Then Tuesday hit. Wham!

All of us (except my husband who has some superpower for waking up early and is gone before we're up) were frantically running around the house trying to get back into our routine. It involved some shouting, a little crankiness and whole lot of attitude. It was a harsh, cruel reality but it wasn't really our fault.

And herein lies the problem with a beautiful long weekend like that. We clocked off. Our minds, our hearts, our souls, went to that place we're not supposed to go to until the last day of school and we were done until Labour Day.

This is what is making Tuesday so hard. We have 38 more sleeps to go before we can be "officially" back in that mode again. It just seems so cruel.

So, I'm sitting here wondering how I can keep a little bit of that going until we can let routine go for a couple of months. As much as I'd like to stop making lunches, I think my children would protest. As much as my children would like to forget homework, I think their teachers would protest. And as much as I'd like to sit around the pool and drink sangrias all day, I think my bank account would protest. Sigh. What to do?

If I think really hard about it, it wasn't the "what" of the weekend that mattered so much as the "feel" of the weekend. Relaxed. And so for the next 38 more sleeps, I'm going to try and carry that feeling with me. Less time on my computer, more time outside. More time laughing with my kids, instead of barking at them to hurry up. If I can't be on summer holidays quite yet, I'm at least going to try and carry the feeling with me. I just need to recover from this morning first.

Walt Disney World

What's New, What's Next

Walt Disney World

Last month I joined media from across North America for the Summer to Remember Press Event at Walt Disney World in Florida. I'm sure you'll not be surprised to hear that Disney continues to give their guests a million and one reasons to come visit them. As was pointed out to us by Meg Crofton, they are not in the theme park business, or the vacation business, or the cruise business, they are in the experience business and that's what they're determined to give you in the coming months! Check out what's new, what's next at Disney.

"The Magic, The Memories and You!" Summer Show

"There's 104 days of summer vacation
And school comes along just to end it
So the annual problem for our generation
Is finding a good way to spend it"

Are you singing along yet, Mom? This, of course, is the anthem of Phineas and Ferb, those crazy boys of summer. This summer they're rocking it out as the official mascots of Disney's Summer to Remember. Even Cinderella's iconic castle is getting a summertime makeover. If you haven't seen the "Let the Memories Begin" show, trust me when I say it is a spectacular light show that will tug on every heart string you have. I always get misty when pictures from throughout the day pop up on the castle walls. Magic.

Disney's Art of Animation

Disney has outdone themselves with their latest resort at Walt Disney World, pulling out all the stops for large families. Most of the hotel rooms are built with families of 5 and 6 in mind. The first phase, Finding Nemo, opens May 31st, with the other three phases—Cars, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King—opening throughout the summer. This is going to be a hot resort this summer, so book now. For more details check out what I had to say about my visit to the Finding Nemo wing here.

New Fantasyland

The biggest expansion to hit Walt Disney World since it opened in 1971, the New Fantasyland began opening in phases in March of 2012. If you're heading this summer, you'll be able to see the new Fantasyland Train Station, the new Dumbo ride, and the Casey Jr. Splash and Soak. By holidays 2012, you'll be able to enjoy Ariel's Grotto, Journey of the Little Mermaid, Enchanted Tales with Belle and the Be Our Guest Restaurant. I was one of a lucky few to get a behind the scenes look at how Fantasyland is progressing last month. You can get all the details here.

Disney Cruise Line

Call it a crazy hunch, but I'm pretty sure the Disney Cruise Line is just going to keep growing and growing. They've added some fun new sailings for the summer months.  In May, the Disney Magic began sailing out of New York City with itineraries that include a 8-Night to the Bahamas, a 5-Night to New England and Canada, and a weekend cruise. The Disney Wonder, on the west coast, will offer 7-Night cruises from the Port of Seattle to Alaska, with a stop in Canada of course.

Adventures By DisneyFar East

If you haven't heard of Adventures By Disney, prepare to have your heart flutter a little here. Basically, Disney has taken world travel and turned it into a stress-free, worry-free, totally immersive experience the whole family will enjoy. I regularly dream of doing the Italy trip through them. *sigh* Now though, they've gone and added the Far East adventure and I'm so torn. Coming in 2013, guests explore Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia with their own private guide. When I wish upon a star, this trip will be right up there now!

Wild Africa Trek

Just over a year old, Disney's Wild Africa Trek is gaining in popularity. Is it any wonder? Only a maximum of 12 people get to go behind the scenes with two guides and explore the "African Savanna" for three hours. It's a close up tour with Nile crocodiles, hippos, elephants, giraffes and lions. There's also an incredible lunch served at a private safari camp. I was lucky enough to go on the Trek last year when it first opened. You can read what I wrote about this incredible family adventure here.
