Lessons We All Could Live By

We all wish certain things for our children. And while my kids are often my greatest teachers, there are many life lessons I hope they learn. I feel that if they live with these five philosophies in mind, life will be far easier for them.

You are responsible for your own happiness.

Resist the temptation to rely on any one person or any one thing to make you happy. When life gets difficult, it’s easy to blame others or outside circumstances. But how we deal with difficulties is our choice. You will get hurt, people will disappoint you, but at the end of the day it is only you that can choose the right way for you.

You cannot change how people think, view, or see you.

You can only control how you see yourself. Keep focused on your own behaviour, the way you treat people and the way you react to them.

Celebrate yourself for who you are.

Do not compare. Healthy competition is good but only if the goal is betterment of yourself, or challenging yourself towards a goal you hope to achieve. Straight comparison is futile. We all have stories, relationships, circumstances and influences that make us our unique individual selves.

Be present. Right here. Right now.

Don’t waste your timing worrying about the past or stressing about the future. The past has happened, and we learn from it, but to dwell in the past robs us of what is happening now. Worrying about the future or dreaming of "the time when" also prevents us from appreciating what it is we have in front of us right now.

Be thankful.

There will be highs and hardships, challenges and fabulous moments. Regardless of what is going on around you there will always be something to be grateful for. Being grateful keeps you connected to the beauty that is this life.
